A ten-minute stroll down Castle Hill from the College’s North Gate takes you to Magdalene Bridge in the historic centre of the City. Here you can absorb the full flavour of traditional Cambridge – go punting, enjoy the riverside restaurants and cosmopolitan bars and explore the medieval colleges and museums. On your walk down from Fitzwilliam, make sure you stop and climb William the Conqueror’s Norman castle mound – you’ll get a spectacular view of Cambridge – and take time out in the oasis which is Kettle’s Yard, the University’s Modern Art Gallery.

 

If you are coming by car, the College is easy to find from Junction 13 of the M11 and Junction 31 eastbound, and we have plenty of free parking

Geschichte

Fitzwilliam was founded in 1869 specifically to broaden access to Cambridge University. The College moved to its current site in 1963 and received its royal charter in 1966. At the heart of its beautiful grounds is a fine Regency house once occupied by Emma Darwin, and the campus boasts award-winning buildings by key 20th and 21st century architects.

The first student accommodation and the impressive Hall building were designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, New Court and the award-winning Chapel are by Sir Richard MacCormac, Wilson Court by van Heyningen & Haward and Gatehouse Court and the Auditorium by Allies & Morrison. The new Library & IT Centre, designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, and opened by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2010, completes the whole College site.

A self-service breakfast, either full English or continental is available in the Hall between 08:00 and 09:00 each day.

Group dinners may be arranged in advance and at extra cost. Please make your request in the Additional Information section of the booking form.

The Café Bar in Fitzwilliam is open most days and evenings (the Porters will have details) and serves great cakes and sandwiches. It also has free wifi.

There are numerous pubs and restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk of the College.

Grundstücke und Gärten

The Fitzwilliam College Gardens offer a display of modern and traditional planting, tended by our five-strong gardening team. Discover the metaphorical water of the Sunken Garden, the primeval Gingko biloba, and the gigantic, ancient plane tree — one of many fine mature trees on the site.

The College grounds were once Emma Darwin’s garden and beautiful old trees provide a haven for birds and wildlife. She wrote in 1883, “I never saw such a display of primroses anywhere, especially under each of the beech trees; they were like a carpet.” These two beech trees are still standing, and the 100-year-old lime tree avenue still creates a wonderful vista from Storey's Way to The Grove.

A token-operated laundry is available; tokens can be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge. Wash: £1.50; and Dryer: 40p. 

Hairdryers, alarm clocks and adaptors are available from the Porters’ Lodge. A £10 refundable deposit is required.
