History to the present day
University College, formerly University Women’s College, was the pioneer college for women’s education at The University of Melbourne. After many long years of campaigning against considerable opposition, it was established in 1937 as an independent, non-denominational College for women. The College became mixed in 1975 and now there are approximately equal numbers of men and women residents.
Food and Drinks
University College has a traditional College style dining hall. Breakfast, lunch & dinner are served here throughout the year for all guests. Breakfast is included in the Apartment tariff and lunch and dinner can be purchased separately. During the Academic year, the College community dines together on Monday and Tuesday nights. Apartment guests are welcome to join the College staff and tutors on high table for dinner on these nights. Academic gowns must be worn on these two nights and academic gowns are provided in the apartments.
Breakfast includes continental buffet (cereal, yogurts, toast, juice, tea/coffee and fruits, etc) and a hot option on Tuesdays and Fridays. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and chilled water are available all day.
The College is a short walk from Melbourne’s famous Lygon Street Restaurant precinct which in addition to many restaurants and cafes also contains a supermarket, Chemist, bookshop and other specialty retailers.
There is tram stop outside the College ensuring easy tram access to the city centre and its many resturants.
Grounds and gardens
The College is set in extensive established gardens on a 5 acre site that offers a park-like ambience. At its centre are two beautiful courtyards where guests can relax over a meal and soak up College life. The apartments have their own private entrances so that guests can enjoy the buzz of College life or seclusion as they choose.
***** PLEASE NOTE: From 1 December 2015 until the end of July 2017, the Dining Hall will be carrying out major building works to demolish and extend the building. This work will affect some college rooms and apartments, reducing the natural light in the room and there will be some noise pollution between the hours of 8am – 6pm. *****
The College has a tennis court on site which is available for guest use at no charge. For joggers and walkers, the popular Princess Park trail is just across the road.
The College is walking distance from Royal Park and the Melbourne Zoo.
The College provides one free car parking space per apartment.
Internet access is available in all apartements / rooms.
There are laundry facilities within each building, including a washer/dryer.
Visitors can use the library, 24 hour resource centre, computers and printers.

Fantastic accommodation, the room large & spotless; the staff exceedingly friendly & helpful; excellent food; the garden was a delight & the 24 hour use of the library with computers & wifi was a brilliant bonus. I would highly recommend this accommodation.

Comfortable, accessible and friendly - I had everything I needed within walking distance of the course I was attending. Good to have off street parking and secure accommodation. Quiet environment with lovely gardens and clean well kept facilities. This is the second time I have stayed at University College and I would stay again.
Mrs Shelley M
No internet issues at all, great in fact, had my own bathroom, easy checkin even on a Saturday. Would definitely stay again

For my wife and me it was a really good experience: meeting other people from students to other guests. We enjoyed the conviviality and it reminded us of our stay in pilgrim hostel accommodation along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes/les Chemins de St Jacques de Compostelle both in France and Spain. https://www.caminodownunder.com

1. It would be great if there was a little more info on the website. I was keen to find out if there was access to a kitchen where we could cook our own meals, however I couldn't find any clear info about this.
2. The Resident Tutors were very prompt, friendly and helpful.
3. The floor looked a bit unclean.
4. The quality and choice available at breakfast was great. The kitchen staff were helpful and friendly.
5. Overall a great experience. The location of the college was perfect for the conference I was attending and made my stay exceptionally easy.
6. Overall, good value for money.
