1 Cowley Place Guest House (Magdalen College), Oxford

History

Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by William Waynflete , Bishop of Winchester and Lord Chancellor, on site of the Hospital of St John, just outside Oxford's East Gate.

Several additions were made after Waynflete's death in 1486 in 1492, the foundation stone was laid for a grand new bell tower, 144 feet high. The high street range, and gargoyles in the cloister followed. In the early 1730s Edward Holdsworth designed a grand new quadrangle, but only in the north range, the New Building was never completed.

Food & beverage

Breakfast is served Monday – Saturday between 8.00am - 9.30am in the Medieval Hall on the main site of Magdalen College, just a  5 minute walk from the guest house. On Sunday a  continental breakfast is served in the guest house communal room between 8.00am - 9.00am. 

Self catering facilities are also provided.

Grounds & Gardens

Access to the garden at the rear of the property is not included in your stay.

Addison walk is a picturesque footpath around a small island in the River Cherwell  in the grounds of Magdalen College. There are good views of Magdalen Tower and Magdalen Bridge from along the walk.

Free access to Magdalen College grounds when staying with us.

Christ Church meadow is an open space at the heart of Oxford, open to the public, within walking distance from Cowley Place.
