Christ Church is centrally located, in the beautiful City of Oxford, close to all amenities as well as to excellent transport links.

Guests are accommodated in Christ Church’s comfortable bedrooms. These are located in buildings of architectural and or historical interest either beside lawned quadrangles, overlooking gardens or the Meadow. The buildings reflect the differing centuries since the college’s foundation in 1546.

Rooms, for single or twin occupancy are located on ground, first, second and third floors. Many rooms have their own private shower and toilet; all have tea and coffee making facilities, free WiFi and a refrigerator. The college’s accommodation also includes standard single study bedrooms and our popular twin ‘sets’. Standard Rooms have shared bathroom and toilet facilities between approximately four rooms. Please note that not all facilities may be available on the same floor as your room. You may have to go up- or downstairs to find the nearest facilities.

Please note Single Standard Rooms are mainly up several flights of stairs and there are no lifts in any accommodation buildings. If you have mobility difficulties and require a low floor room, please make a note of this in the 'Additional Information' section when making your booking and we will endeavour to accommodate your requirements. There is, however,  a lift to the Great Hall where breakfast is served. We will do our best to support other special access needs, bearing in mind the constraints of historic buildings.

Please note Christ Church is unable to accommodate babies, children and young people.

History to the present day

Christ Church, is one of the largest and grandest of Oxford’s colleges.  It was founded by Henry VIII in 1546. The most ambitious plans, which led to the grandest buildings, were those of Henry’s Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. He laid out the Great Quadrangle, the kitchen and the Great Hall, which were completed by 1529 and have not been substantially altered since. Significant additions to the college’s architectural heritage have occurred over the centuries.

Of the various buildings which compose Christ Church, the oldest is the 12th century collegiate Cathedral, originally the conventual church of St Frideswide’s priory. Almost as ancient as the Cathedral, and on its southern side is the Chapter House, part Norman but mainly 13th century. The cloister was rebuilt in about 1499 and the former monastic refectory, which forms the southern boundary of the cloister, housed the college library from 1561. After the New Library was opened in the 18th century the refectory building was converted into residential rooms. This nucleus of ancient priory buildings, much restored and altered, is all that escaped demolition when in 1525 Cardinal Wolsey set about his ambitious scheme for Cardinal College which was later refounded by Henry VIII as Aedes Christi, that is: Christ Church.

Christ Church boasts many famous alumni including thirteen former British Prime Ministers. Charles Dodgson, whose pen name was Lewis Carroll, the author of 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Alice through the Looking Glass' was also a member of Christ Church.  There are many Alice-related things to see at Christ Church and, of course, the first Harry Potter film was staged, in part, in the Great Hall and Hall staircase.

Food and Drinks

A Full English Breakfast is provided each morning between 07.30am -9.00am Monday - Saturday and 8.00am - 9.30am on Sundays. Breakfast is served in the unique setting of the Great Hall with its stunning hammer beam roof and wonderful oil paintings.

There is a delightful college bar called the Buttery where drinks may be purchased in the early evening.

There are lots of restaurants, bars and cafés nearby or it may be possible to book dinner in the Great Hall subject to availability.

Grounds and gardens

Christ Church is unique amongst the Oxford Colleges for its wonderful meadow which has remained unchanged for centuries. The Meadow is full of wildlife and is home to Christ Church's own long-horn cattle. There is a beautiful tree-lined walk down to the river Isis and there are lots of grass areas which lend themselves to a picnic or are a perfect setting to while away the day with a book. We are also a pleasant walk from the well-known Botanical Gardens. It is also possible to hire a punt or rowing boat nearby.

Guided Tours of the College grounds and gardens are available to book online prior to your arrival. Please see the Christ Church website for further information http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/plan-your-visit/talks-and-tours

Fantastic experience, wonderful atmosphere and buildings. Love Oxford!
Dr Sue C

My overall experience was excellent. I would definitely use this service, and stay here, again. Breakfast in the Great Hall was a real treat! My only comment on the standard of room and facilities is that the lack of lip on the shower caused the small en-suite to flood slightly. This did not alter my overall experience though.
Ms Tamara I

Excellent experience, and value for Money
