History to the present day
The College transferred to Oxford from Birmingham in 1886 and became a Free Church centre for the study of theology, preparing students from any dissenting denomination for the ministry.
Building work began on the current college site, which was purchased from Merton College in October 1886, and was completed at a cost of £40,000 in October 1889. The original Gothic style buildings are regarded as amongst the finest work of the prominent Victorian Architect Basil Champneys.
Mansfield admitted its first female student, Constance Todd, who later became the first woman to be ordained to the Christian ministry in Britain in 1913.
Mansfield College became a Permanent Private Hall in 1955 and received a Royal Charter in 1995, becoming a full college of the University of Oxford.
The College is a small, friendly college with about 300 students and 70 staff, of which about 45 belong to the Senior Common Room. It has a reputation within and beyond Oxford of encouraging applications from the state sector and in particular from students in Further Education.

Mr Anthony O'Grady, April 2014: The staff were exemplary particularly the Porters.
Dr emmanuel h. tadross, April 2014: Excellent reception from the head&deputy
porters.the general information provided
was much appreciated.
Breakfast staff were curteous and attentive.
Dr Mark Bond, April 2014: At the end of the day, it is still a functional student accomodation rather than a swish hotel. I DID book the room on this basis and the accomodation were perfectly fine for my purposes. Very comfortable stay and lovely College grounds. I would like to emphasize the efficiency and friendliness of the Breakfast staff and even more so from the Porters during my stay. I would like to add a couple of points:
1. I appreciate that the College is an historic site, as such I fully anticipated that scaffolding and workmen would be all around as a necessity. I did not have any issues with noise at all - I know that this may have been more of a disappointment for other visitors - but I was glad to see the ongoing preservation.
2. There was a notice stating that towels etc would not be changed everyday unless left in the sink, yet my were changed most days when I left them on the railings. I know that some people would like them changed everyday, but from an environmental perspective I would have been happy to reuse mine. Similarly, for the shower gels/shampoos, I would have been happy to use up the old tubes first rather than them be changed daily and go to waste. As a suggestion, perhaps place new ones and leave the old ones as well - it will be obvious if the visitor will finish any open tubes.
These observations are not criticisms, as they actually highlight greater attention to guest requirements, but from a cost and eco-friendly viewpoint I thought I would raise these.
It was a very enjoyable stay, made more pleasant by your staff - and a little sunshine.
Miss Charlotte Evans, March 2014: Anyone wishing to stay near the School of Law, will find this to be the most convenient location.
The rooms are clean and the facilities good, notwithstanding the age of the buildings.
Mr Andy Barratt, March 2014: Breakfast was awesome. The porter was extremely helpful.
One bed had a slope to it and the other was quite short and narrow.
6ft tall lads found their feet stuck out of the end of the bed.
Other than the beds it was a lovely place to stay and the trip was enjoyed.
Dr Isabelle Ward, March 2014: Charming small double bedroom and bright, clean en suite. Definitely with it!
Breakfast was good value.
Mrs Janice Mitchell, January 2014: Overall, a positive experience. Notably, the porter whose welcome and instructions were excellent. However, I felt the price was a little high, given the standard of accomodation.
Mr James Hawkins, September 2013: Very comfortable. Mansfield College staff very friendly.
Miss Maddy Ward, September 2013: Excellent, would highly recommend! Great room, great breakfast, friendly service and central location.
Mr Daniel Treyer, September 2013: + Good price-performance ratio
+ Excellent WiFi speed
Mr Dominic Crilly, August 2013: A great place for a family holiday. The college porters were really pleasant and helpful, even letting us use a college croquet set. Erasmus the college cat made us especially welcome. An interesting development since last time is a sculpture (one of our party identified it as by Anthony Gormley; perhaps of St Peter Crucified?). Not to anyone's taste (see it soon, surely it won't last), but certainly a talking point. Well done Mansfield, many thanks.
Miss Dalia Hosn, August 2013: The porters and cleaning staff were very nice and gracious. We stayed there for 3 weeks and got the full dose of university life, it was very very unforgettable. We would love to go there again!
Mr JOHN WILSON, August 2013: E xcellent stay, breakfast was exceptionally good; as was the helpfulness of the staff- porters and dining room. John Wilson

Prof Jacqueline deVries, July 2013: I was so pleased to find this online booking service for the Oxford colleges, and even more pleased with the overall experience at Mansfield. I highly recommend it!
Mr Rahul Shah, July 2013: Mansfield is perfectly located for a trip to Oxford - in the heart of the university but still some distance from the busy high street and Cornmarket area. Absolutely great architecture and a great room (if you imagine that this is after all student accommodation). Clean and spotless - I'd definitely stay here again.
Ms Margarita Suharchuk, April 2013: Student accommodation, so don't expect any luxuries, but the room was spotlessly clean and had all necessary facilities including a small fridge and tea-making kit. The porter was extremely helpful and nice. Great value for money for central Oxford.
Ms Jocelyn Songco, April 2013: very pleasant gentleman manning the front desk, and great breakfast staff. thank you for a lovely stay.
Ms Wendy Poulton, April 2013: Porters were exteemely helpful and friendly.
Ms Eluned Evans, April 2013: I had a marvellous time - although the two fire alarms on the same day were a bit disconcerting (one while I was in the shower and the other soon after I'd fallen asleep!). I would certainly be happy to come to Mansfield College again. The Porters were extremely helpful and the cleaning and waiting staff were delightful as well as efficient.
Mrs Gillian Fitzpatrick, April 2013: Just on the online booking I didn't find it obvious as to how to get to the actual booking page.
Overall I had a wonderful few days and all the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful
Mr Kevin Lalor, April 2013: The accommodation is as one would expect for student rooms - perfectly adequate and comfortable. The lack of toilet en suite will not suit everybody.
All the staff we met were obliging and very friendly. The star attraction is the location, and the 'olde worlde' quad environment, which was delightful. Mansfield is an easy walk to a range of restaurants and pubs.
Would recommend and I hope to stay again.
Mrs Laura Francis, March 2013: We enjoyed a delightful stay at Mansfield College - it's central location is ideal for visiting both the University and the city of Oxford. The porters were friendly and helpful and breakfast was excellent .I am sure we will stay here again. Our French exchange student said she felt like Harry Potter whilst eating breakfast in the chapel !
Mr Jeff Pedde, November 2012: My few days in Mansfield College were a great experience. The rooms were standard student fare but adequate, clean and well maintained. The service was exemplary. From room cleaning to dining room as well as the porters, the staff at the college were wonderful, helpful and accommodating. I look forward to my next stay at the college soon.
Mrs Margareth Hes - Burki, October 2012: Beautiful place, great location and lovely breakfast and kind people!
Dr Ifan O G Davies, October 2012: Despite being a student at Jesus in the 1980s I have never previously visited Mansfield but I must say this was a most enjoyable experience. The porter was welcoming and patiently gave all the necessary information. The room was spotlessly clean, comfortable, and peaceful. Mansfield breakfasts are rumoured to be "the best in Oxford" and it would be hard not to agree! The food was excellent and the service slick.
Mr Magnus Melsom, September 2012: Mansfield College is a beautiful, historic place to stay and the service is excellent!
Mr maite CUARTERO, August 2012: wonderfull experience being here ,incredible place to stay.thank you
Miss Lindsey Purchall, March 2012: The room was slightly above what you would expect from student accommodation: spacious, en suite, with a small fridge and a lovely view over the garden, although with the usual 'firm' bed! Very quiet location yet less than 10 minutes' walk from the town centre. Both in the Porter's Lodge and the Dining Room we received a friendly welcome and helpful service. I would definitely recommend Mansfield College.
Mr Stefan Lohaus, March 2012: Great stay, will be back!
Mr Stephen de Brett, September 2011: Very comfortable stay, impressed by porters lodge, extremely helpful and friendly. The same goes for the dining room.
Mr Christopher Saunders, September 2011: Cheerful and helpful porters in the Lodge, much better than many B & Bs

Mrs shahsirekha sundaram, July 2011: what a wonderful college and such a beautiful setting. Great staff and so very kind and helpful . Everyone from the manager and the head porter to all the other staff at the porters lodge , the maids, and the breakfast staff are extremely courteous and helpful.
Katrina Samaras, October 2010: A very nice stay and happy memories. I loved staying at Mansfield, so comfortable and convenient, and the breakfasts were top quality.
Maria Shmygol, September 2010: The room was good, very clean and tidy, with beautiful views.
Dr Manjula Devi M.J., September 2010: I came to oxford for the first time.I was really afraid of the silence there. But Mansfield gave me a totally safe and secured stay. The room was adequate with all facilities and people were very helpful.I really had a great stay there.
Miss malgorzata zych, September 2010: very good standard.
nice & helpfull staff.
Lorna Cowie, September 2010: In such a beautiful setting, how could one not be enchanted by the College. The room was functional, the bathroom was shared, but when you looked out the window and saw the lawns and buildings, none of this mattered.
A beautiful place to be.
Georgina B Piazza, July 2010: It was all a dream.... the surroundings, the service at the Porters' Lodge, the Dining Hall... Slight lowering of the mark for breakfast because we were served stewed CANNED tomatoes (in the middle of summer, a cardinal sin!) with the bacon and egg. Also, the price is a bit on the high side for this kind of accommodation - but not enough not to make me return happily again - if you fix the tomatoes!
Chris Jacobsen, July 2010: I was very happy with the stay. It was nice to get a glimpse of an Oxford college!
Jesper Wiese, July 2010: Very helpful staff
Josephine Bennett, July 2010: Fantastic room and location. I will definitely use University Rooms again. Thank you.

Gustav Greve, July 2010: Overall a great experience, very friendly, my doughter and me enjoyed the stay
Laura Jansen, March 2010: We enjoyed our stay and would use the service to book in a college again - it's great to be in the centre of Oxford and feel you're part of the university. The only thing we found was that although we'd given our estimated time of arrival, when we arrived (on time) there was no-one in the porters' lodge. Luckily, after waiting for 5-10 minutes, some students turned up who went to find the porter, otherwise I don't know how long we'd have had to wait.
H.C.v.d. Heuvel, August 2009: it was a very special experience, we love it. We feel like students again. Central in Oxford and the service was very good. I left my jacket en they send it to my home. Many thanks. Ineke van den heuvel from Holland
Richard Griffiths, August 2009: Very pleasant - thank you.
EDWARD CALLEJA, April 2009: I had a very good stay. Thank you
Eduardo Laborda, March 2009: Very kind staff and superb breakfast
