History to the present day
Somerville College was founded in 1879, in response to a growing demand to provide an Oxford education for women. Its founders named the College in honour of the Scottish mathematician and scientist Mary Somerville (1780-1872), and the Somerville family arms and motto (the notoriously untranslatable "Donec rursus impleat orbem") were adopted.
The choice of name was significant. The College’s founders admired Mary Somerville both as a remarkable scholar, and for her religious and political views. She was a self-taught science writer, wife, mother of 5 children, and polymath. In 1868, was the first person to sign John Stuart Mill’s petition to Parliament in support of women’s suffrage. Having been denied formal educational opportunities herself, she was a fervent advocate of access to education for other women.
Somerville alumnae have achieved an impressive number of “firsts” - the first, and only, British woman to win a Nobel prize in science(Dorothy Hodgkin); the highest ranking female officer of her time in the British intelligence services (the Queen of Spies, Daphne Park); the first woman to lead the world’s largest democracy (Indira Gandhi); the first Indian woman barrister (Cornelia Sorabji) and the first woman Prime Minister of this country(Margaret Thatcher).
Countless others have forged path-breaking careers in academic life, politics, literature, science, law, business, education and the media.

Prof Naomi Chayen, March 2015: The room was very pleasant and confortable and the bathroom was very clean. Connecting to the Wi-ifi was very complicated. The people at the porters lodge were exteremly helpful, without their help it woud not have been such a pleaseant experience. I did not book online (i did it on the phone) and did not have breakfast
Dr Claire Oxby, March 2015: Friendly and helpful staff. Basic 'student type' room but very clean and comfortable. Room set into the eves which gave it character but it also meant that the shared bathroom did not have a shower which was a bit disappointing. Did not have breakfast but could of by paying £7.50 cash which is reasonable.
Mrs Anne Stedman, March 2015: Really enjoyed our night in Somerville. Very nice man greeted us. Bath supberb. Room basic but comfy. Tea facilities.
Prof Yoko Odawara, March 2015: People gave me assistance in their busy schedule.
Ms Isabel Lopez Ruiz, February 2015: Really beautiful and welcoming room. The sheets and towels were pristine and it was very warm too! The bathrooms, although shared, were huge and I never saw anyone else using them. Overall, fantastic value for money and very central location. Will definitely recommend and stay again myself!
Mr Richard Dawson, February 2015: A smart and professional booking service, and a pleasant night in a beautiful college.
Mr Simon Kemp, February 2015: It was a fantastic experience to stay overnight in one of Oxford's newer Colleges and sample life as a student. My room in Somerville College was warm, clean and reasonably~priced with complimentary fast Wi~Fi as an added bonus! The College Porters at the gatehouse could not have been more friendly and helpful.
Mr George Lewis, January 2015: No breakfast available at weekends (see above) which I was made aware of at booking. A very warm and friendly welcome at the college.
Mr Simon Redgate, January 2015: a great stay - excellent customer service
Mr Sergio Guimon, January 2015: Excellent value for the money
Mr geoffrey baird, January 2015: I was staying in Student Halls for its convenience to the college and my meetings. Everything was very easy and went smoothly. I did have to share a bathroom and a student hall is slightly noisy, but the convenience outweighed all of that. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I did not eat breakfast but it was available in the student restaurant every day.
Mr James Crossman, December 2014: As always, friendly and helpful team at the Lodge, interesting and slightly quirky accommodation.........but with the WOW factor of joining a snippet college life and the exceptional buildings for a night or two.
Mrs Susan O'Donoghue, December 2014: This was my second stay - rooms are basic, clean and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Tea/coffee tray in room which is very handy at the end of a long day. The college is a brisk 10 minute walk from central area. If you want beyond basic then this is not for you - but I would happily stay again when in Oxford as it's a lovely site to soak up the atmosphere of Oxford college life.
Prof Yoko Odawara, December 2014: I am grateful for people's kind help.
Mr Laurence Kirk, December 2014: The room was rather cold overnight, and the shared bathroom was busy.
Breakfast wasn't included, so I mark that as average.
The lodge staff were friendly and helpful though.
Ms susan raes, November 2014: Sommerville is easy to get to. I loved it because you live the dream of being an undergraduate. Would not have swapped it for a boring hotel. Darbishire is 1930s and a little gem of a quad round the porter's lodge. The bed and bathroom was quite basic. Don't come here if you want bling!
Mr Stephen Ferron, November 2014: I didn't have breakfast so that line didn't apply but . . . I was impressed by the ease of the on-line check-in, the welcome provided by the porter and the cleanliness and comfort of the room. Many thanks!
Mr Giles Gunesekera, November 2014: Thank you!
Miss Katarzyna Nowak, November 2014: Excellent stayat Somerville, good service and tidy room of a good size. Highly recommend.
Ms Jo Lyon, November 2014: Breakfast wasn't included (though was offered for an extra charge - but I didn't have it). The room was quiet and comfortable and the porters were great. As the facilities are shared I would make a request for larger towels to make it possible to travel back to your room without having to get dressed in the bathroom!
Dr Elizabeth Agnew, November 2014: Room warm spotlessly clean and Somerville is a beautiful college and a central location for city centre and bohemian Jericho
Will definitely go again
Dr Ohad Kammar, November 2014: I've enjoyed the experience thoroughly, highly recommend it, and will try to book with Somerville again next time I'm in Oxford.
Prof Yoko Odawara, November 2014: I am very grateful to people's help.
Prof Yoko Odawara, November 2014: I appreciate people's help.
Mrs Deborah Wargate, November 2014: Good basic student accomodation and although bed was a bit lumpy it met my needs. I had breakfast at a fab cafe just down the road so can't comment on that. For the price and location I was happy.
Ms mel whewell, November 2014: The staff at the Porters Lodge were very welcoming and helpful.
I didn't have breakfast with you so don't count the average score above.
You perhaps need a box for didn't have breakfast?
Only issue was with WiFi. It seemed to take ages to connect. It was easier to connect via my phone than it was via my tablet. I did get it working though... eventually.
Mrs Eleanor Jones, November 2014: Centrally located . Quiet and very friendly greeting staff
Mr Paul James, October 2014: Very easy and friendly welcome
Mrs Kerry Barrans, October 2014: Porter Danny extremely helpful. Even with building site next door, noise was not intrusive . . . and the view to the old observatory was lovely! Grounds were beautiful and we found it an interesting experience staying in college as it brough back memories of our time at university. Would choose university accommodation again.
Mr Alan Hughes, October 2014: The guest we booked the room for says that she was outstandingly satisfied with the room and factilities
Mr Guy Davies, September 2014: Thank you for a wonderful stay. A great location and excellent value.
Mr William Whobrey, September 2014: very nice stay, thanks so much!
Mrs GUISTINA RYAM, September 2014: A comfortable, well equipped and quiet room and everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Dr Rae Thomas, September 2014: Thank you for a great stay at Somerville College. It was clean, quiet and the breakfasts were of a high standard. My minor concern was the slow internet.
Mr Bill Coote, September 2014: Porter staff very friendly and helpful.
Mrs Hazel Thornton, September 2014: Very helpful staff. Nothing too much trouble. A joy to stay there.
Mr Rodrigo Olmos, September 2014: Very pleasant stay
Ms Roberta Burns, September 2014: fantastic proximity to town centre. Best deal in Oxford for punting, there was a problem organizing the punting experience and hopefully the system is more transparent now. Beautiful campus
Mrs Annabel McKie, September 2014: Staff at Porters Lodge were so helpful and friendly, it made all the difference, especially as I was recovering from illness and feeling a bit fragile when we first arrived.
Ms Rebecca Mallaband, September 2014: The room was of a very high quality and the service received upon check-in was outstanding and very friendly!
Mr Bo Meng, August 2014: Didn't actually have the breakfast but the fact it was there at all is nice. Really enjoyed staying at the college!
Mr Paul Stirton, August 2014: Staff were excellent; helpful, friendly and obliging. We arrived earlier than planned, very tired from a transatlantic flight, and they let us in to the room before the stated time. They were also very helpful in giving advice for our visit.
Mr Josh Kaldor-robinson, August 2014: Absolutely perfect for my needs.
Mrs P A Cross, August 2014: The room was spacious, and fairly quiet, with a lovely view. The College is very conveniently located. The staff were warmly welcoming, helpful and approachable. A pity that the mattress was so hard, and it was not all that easy sharing toilet and bathroom facilities - (which were also dated, and somewhat uncomfortable). Otherwise a most enjoyable stay.
Mr Roger Beaudry, July 2014: We very much appreciated the porters' help and found the room very clean and comfortable.
Ms Amanda Minns, July 2014: Lovely accomodation - rooms very hot and little ventilation but overall a lovely palce to stay.
Mr Jeroen Missinne, July 2014: Good but basic rooms
Prof Yoko Odawara, July 2014: Very good experience.
Dr Karen Stockham, July 2014: The Oxford University Rooms initiative is excellent. This is the third Oxford College I have stayed at and one cannot better the service and facilities in terms of value for money and a unique experience in heritage accommodation. Please thank the Porters at the Somerville Porters' Lodge for their welcome and help with storing luggage on my day of departure.
Mrs Georgina Dunlop, July 2014: Nice spacious room. The metal bed frame wasn't as firm as I would have liked, making the bed a bit too soft, but the linen was nice and fresh, and I enjoyed the stay. Lovely view of the garden from the window.
Miss Margaret McParland, July 2014: I found my stay in Somerville College restful and would have no hesitation in staying there again or recommending it to friends.
Dr Rosie Wyles, July 2014: The room is basic but nicely done, staff are friendly and helpful, breakfast generous and delicious. Easy walking distance of town. This is great value for money for Oxford....
Mr John Huke, June 2014: Great, thanks!
Only criticism was that the window had no stay.
Dr Agnes Garcia Ventura, June 2014: All was perfect: location, staff, charming of the place. If I come back to Oxford, I will try to go to Somerville again. I had no opportunity to have breakfast there, but I imagine it's good as well.
Miss Claire Doffegnies, June 2014: I had a lovely stay at Somerville College. The accommodation was great- towels and tea making facilities in room with soaps and shower gels, and all the porters were really friendly. I was visiting for an interview, and one of them even showed me where my interview was taking place (very helpful). The next day they were kind enough to give me a map and recommendations where to visit in the city. Had a great time, thank you !
Miss Rebecca Nachiappan, June 2014: The room was perfect and wasn't too small, and the people at the reception were lovely. I really enjoyed my time there and will definitely try staying here again the next time I come to Oxford.
Mr Jonathan Franks, June 2014: Room quite small but had everything I needed for a one night stay. It was clean, warm and comfortable.
I did not require breakfast and so have not given it a mark.
Mrs Frances Murray, May 2014: Made to feel very welcome, porters most helpful they added much to overall experience and should be valued.
Mrs Rama Sahtout, May 2014: Every thing was good. The people there were nice and helpful. The room, the bedding were very clean. I liked the place and will definitely book it again in the future. One comment about the bathroom. It was clean and the hot water was available, but there was no shower, only bath.
Mr Eoin O'Shea, May 2014: No breakfast included but price was great. Real sense of staying in 'old Oxford' - recommended for anyone who doesn't mind sharing a toilet and getting breakfasr elsewhere.
Mr Fengzai Tang, May 2014: The reception staff are very helpful.
Mrs Alison Garside, April 2014: Peaceful nights sleep.
Rooms very clean and warm
Mrs Rhona Margulius, April 2014: I was very pleased with everything & everyone was very pleasant. I would recommend you anytime. Thanks

Mr Richard Sepulveda, September 2013: the matress could have been better. everything else was great.
Mr David Lillicrap, September 2013: This is always a great experience - please keep making rooms available. I missed breakfast, to meet with relatives downtown, but was really quite disappointed not to see the breakfast room.
Dr Katharine Fox, August 2013: College staff really helpful - made a good experience an excellent one!
Miss RUTH DERRICK, August 2013: A lovely experience. We very much enjoyed staying in College and eating breakfast at the Top Table. The booking process was simple and everyone we met during our stay couldn't have been more polite and helpful. The new block was clean and comfortable. My only tiny complaint was that I couldn't connect my ipad to your wi-fi at all. I know I could have sought assistance, but it hardly seemed worth the effort for such a short stay when I only wanted to check my emails - which I did in a local coffee shop. However, that was the only minor gripe - everything else was terrific!
Ms Katharine Millar, August 2013: We had a pleasant stay. Some additional in room information about how to open the side windows and ventilation louvers would be helpful. We figured it out within the day but some folks at breakfast said it took them several days...:)
Ms Angelika Dehn, July 2013: great experience, definitely recommend this. When in Oxford, I will come back to Somerville
Ms Catherine Butler, June 2013: My stay was made especially pleasant by the helpful porters at Somerville.
It was good to have a kettle and enough materials for tea-making in the room, everything was clean and comfortable.
Ms Kirsty Thorburn, April 2013: Everyone in the group enjoyed their stay and would be happy to come again. Thank you.
Ms Rebecca John, April 2013: Daniel, the porter, was absolutely brilliant. Funny, helpful, really chatty and lovely. Thank you! The three fire alarms and the dodgy, rocking, wall socket were minor blips!
Prof Ron Glatter, March 2013: Very satisfactory overall - the room was excellent. I had a moment of panic when an information sheet I was given said breakfast would not be provided. Fortunately this turned out to be untrue!
Ms Rosemary Metz, December 2012: Dave the porter was excellent in his manner and he went out of his way to make us comfortable. Please pass on our thanks.
Mr stephen blatch, October 2012: Thanks! It was super easy and very efficient. Was impressed.
Mrs Emma Cross, October 2012: What luxury to stay in college and have an ensuite!
Mrs Maureen Bell, September 2012: Loved staying in Somerville, it was quiet and very central. We were able to see almost everything on foot and felt it provided us with a real Oxford experience.
Mrs Christine Clarke, August 2012: Although the breakfast was good and well cooked, by the time we had eaten our cereal, the egg, bacon etc was cold. It would be advantageous to be able to help oneself to cereal and then to return for the cooked items.
Otherwise our stay was very enjoyable and the porters were all cheerful and helpful.
Dr Katharine Fox, August 2012: Lodge staff were particularly helpful, in helping me master some of the technology, including wireless connection. Room was very clean, with daily sheet and towel changes, and the cleaning staff were friendly and unobtrusive. Despite the construction noise, I'd return very happily.
Other Walter Kedjierski, August 2012: Overall pleasant -- room was very small -- location was perfect.
Mr David Cox, August 2012: Brilliant Porters. Really friendly and helpful. Shame we couldn't park in the college.
Mr Michael Raiger, August 2012: Porters were outstanding---friendly, welcoming, reassuring. The guys there on Friday night and Sunday morning should get a raise! I loved it.
My only issue was that the time for breakfast was too short---I missed both mornings.
Ms Yuk Kwan Chan, July 2012: The room is very clean and modern, it's much much better than my expectation, the staff there is very helpful, I did enjoy staying in East building of Somerville. It would be better if Hairdryer is provided.
Prof Margaret Hogg, July 2012: Really helpful reception - very positive impression of the college. After a sticky start with the Wifi link, IT came to the rescue in magnificent fashion so very many thanks for all the help and support on that front as well
Dr Melissa Caldwell, July 2012: Somerville College is located very nicely just north of the bustling city center and is very convenient to the main bus station. It is an ideal location, whether you are in Oxford for work or pleasure. The porters, cleaning and breakfast staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was kept very clean, the wifi worked very well, and breakfast was more than ample. My stay at Somerville College was a great experience. I would stay there again.
Mrs CLARE WHITE, July 2012: It was nice to stay in my old college again after almost 30 years. Even the crokery hadn't changed and my room was certainly better than the one I had as an undergraduate! It was a pity about the buiding site next door but these things do happen. I would go back again.
Mrs Martina Hug, July 2012: It was a nice experience to stay at Sommerville College as a guest. Very friendly staff and a wonderful atmosphere.
Dr Ayano Tachibana, June 2012: Good value for money. the staff was very friendly and helpful!
Mrs Maureen Spence, June 2012: I have given an excellent mark for the breakfast because there was such variety and plenty of fresh fruit but the cooked breakfast could be hotter. The room was delightful with no noise from adjacent rooms because the building is old and substantial but there should be somewhere to hang a wet towel as I shared a bathroom and had to bring it back to my room after a shower. The shower was fantastic - like being under a warm Niagara.
Miss Melissa Moreano, June 2012: Lovely university residency, the people was nice, the room was clean and well located. Perfect for a few days and to enjoy the Oxford experience by sleeping in a college.
Dr Ashley Uttley, June 2012: I found it very difficult to connect to the internet. However, having Wifi included is a great benefit.
Generally a very positive experience - all staff were very friendly.
Ms Anna Wright, June 2012: Very pleasant room in a lovely setting
Mr Howard Atkinson, June 2012: there is no breakfast and so my rating as no n/a is available. very convenient location and nicer than i expected. a good experience.
Mr Timothy Marble, June 2012: Excellent. Room was of standard of student accommodations, so no luxury nor ensuite, but SPARKLING clean, a rarity in affordable UK accommodation. College grounds were beautiful, as was Oxford location. VERY safe, multiple security passpoints/safeguards. Staff was helpful and friendly. Best value for UK accommodations you will find.
Mr Stephen Jackson, June 2012: I found the room comfortable and clean, the service friendly and efficient, and the buildings and quad delightful. Logging on to the wi-fi was more complicated than in most places, but in general I had a very pleasant stay. Thank you very much. NB: I have not marked the breakfast, as none was served (which was made clear when I booked, and is fine at the price).
Dr Andrew Moore, June 2012: The facilities are basic but perfectly comfortable and extremely convenient for the centre. The IT support was excellent. Breakfast is not provided.
Ms Cynthia Chang, June 2012: Great location. Room and bathroom were clean. Service was ok in terms of cleaning the room but the tea and coffee tray was not always replenished. Shared bathroom was ok. Excellent value for money all in all.
Dr Deborah Jones, May 2012: No complaints - knew there was no breakfast and no parking, so in the circumstances I found it all fine. The porter was friendly and helpful, which made the whole experience pleasant.
Mrs Bonnie Rozorio, March 2012: We absolutely loved our stay at Somerville College. Full of atmosphere, it also had all the modern conveniences you appreciate when travelling. It would have been nice if they'd served breakfast, but there are cafes nearby so it wasn't too inconvenient.
Ms Anke Maria Mueller, March 2012: very friendly staff and excellent service!! A cosy, comfortable place!
Mr Christopher Warren, March 2012: Breakfast was not included so not applicable above. Lodge staff were very friendly and helpful
Dr Eilon Poem, March 2012: Small but very tidy room. Clean bathroom just outside the room. No breakfast for guests in Sommerville college, but you can buy it in a variety of shops adjacent to the college. The doormen were very kind. Overall, a very good experience.

Miss Zoe Roberts, March 2012: It was a fantastic room at a really good price. The Porters were especially helpful and friendly, they are a credit to the university. Would highly recommend!
Mr Prashant Jain, February 2012: Good experience, will try again.
Ms Lucia Waldnerova, February 2012: The college staff were extremely friendly. The room was very neat and clean. I was very happy with my stay.
Miss Chantelle Murtagh, February 2012: The room was room-only so I cannot comment on the standard of breakfast. But I had a lovely stay and thought that the place was very beautiful.
Mr Fraser Dallachy, February 2012: Very nice room, in a very convenient location for visiting the city/university.
Dr Alfonso Galderisi, February 2012: Great location at a few minutes from the city's center, the shared bathroom is clean and comfortable, never occupied. The College represents a worth experience for everyone who has to spend a few days in Oxford in a real academic residency. The reception personnel is friendly and will provide you with any help or information. Good wi fi service in room. The rooms are very comfortable and warm, with an enjoyable view on the internal court of the college. I strongly recommend this accommodation for your holiday or work-travel.

Dr Ingrid Erickson, January 2012: Can't wait to return!
Dr Ingrid Erickson, January 2012: Would love a reading or desk lamp of some kind. Otherwise, fabulous!
Ms Elizabeth MacGarvey, January 2012: The room was delightful . I had not realised it was not en suite but that might have been an oversight on my part-it was a bit of a trek to the bathroom. A shower would have felt easier in shared facilities but that is a personal preference. The College had provided excellence in terms of what was possible.I would happily stay there again.
Dr Miguel Correia, December 2011: Excellent service and Accomodation. Everyone is very friendly.
Very near to the center of oxford and most of the colleges.
Ideal for someone attending a conference or seminar at Oxford
