Laundry - Unfortunately laundry facilities are not available to B & B guests.
Hen & Stag Parties are not permitted out of respect for our other guests.
History to the present day
Somerville College was founded in 1879, in response to a growing demand to provide an Oxford education for women. Its founders named the College in honour of the Scottish mathematician and scientist Mary Somerville (1780-1872), and the Somerville family arms and motto (the notoriously untranslatable "Donec rursus impleat orbem") were adopted.
The choice of name was significant. The College’s founders admired Mary Somerville both as a remarkable scholar, and for her religious and political views. She was a self-taught science writer, wife, mother of 5 children. In 1868, was the first person to sign John Stuart Mill’s petition to Parliament in support of women’s suffrage. Having been denied formal educational opportunities herself, she was a fervent advocate of access to education for other women.
Somerville alumnae have achieved an impressive number of “firsts” - the first, and only, British woman to win a Nobel prize in science(Dorothy Hodgkin); the highest ranking female officer of her time in the British intelligence services (the Queen of Spies, Daphne Park); the first woman to lead the world’s largest democracy (Indira Gandhi); the first Indian woman barrister (Cornelia Sorabji) and the first woman Prime Minister of this country(Margaret Thatcher).
Countless others have forged path-breaking careers in academic life, politics, literature, science, law, business, education and the media.

THANKS... Will surely visit again..
Miss PADMINI P
Basic room with shared bathroom but excellent value for money. Really clean housekeeping staff really lovely. Breakfast was delicious, especially the fresh croissants. Porters are very friendly and happy to help.
Dr Laura O
this is the second time I stay at Somerville College and I enjoy it very much! Best aspects are: 1) the porters - they are invariably friendly and very helpful. 2) breakfast: very tasty, and plenty of it.
My room this time was a bit small, but it was only for 3 days, and the shared bathroom on my floor only had a bathtub - I went to use the shower downstairs as i really prefer to use a shower.
Dr Vittoria L
I was one of only three guests staying in college, and was impressed with the breakfast spread that had been laid on. Friendly porters and staff, clean room; no sink in room, but the bathroom down the corridor was spotlessly clean and the hot-water system seems excellent.
Mr Philip L
The staff were friendly. Room was a good size with a nice view over the quad. Bathroom facilities were modern and clean. Overall would definitely recommend.
Miss Mary T
Location is really good. Like the feeling of being safe and one member on the campus. Porters are very helpful with my heavy luggage.
Ms Chunmei M
Rooms with heater, towels, soap, shampoo and extra blanket so despite the cold night it was very comfortable. Power shower in the bathroom across the hall was of excellent quality, plenty of hot water. Very clean room. Porters we're lovely and I felt safe staying here and the location was ideal, not too busy but close to many good restaurants, cafes and museums.
Ms F B
Very grateful for such a excellent stay! The porters' lodge was very helpful throughout and the college is such an attractive place to stay. The room was in excellent condition, as was the bathroom. I'll be back, I hope.
