History to the present day

St Benet’s Hall is owned by the monastic community of St Lawrence at Ampleforth Abbey in Yorkshire – currently the largest monastery in the UK. In its earliest medieval form, the University of Oxford comprised a few Houses of study, with students gathered around a Master. St Benet’s, founded in 1897, stands proud as the closest institution in Oxford to these medieval Halls. The maintenance of these traditions means that St Benet’s preserves the best of Old Oxford and a wonderful family atmosphere.

A self-service continental style breakfast is available in the ground floor Refectory from 8.00am to 9.30am every morning.   If you have any particular dietary requirements, please let us know beforehand by entering these details in the "additional information" section of your booking form.  Stepping outside the Hall, you will find many good restaurants, pubs, cafes and delicatessens in the surrounding area.

, November 2015: Arrangements for entry into the Hall were clearly explained. The room was clean and well-presented. Breakfast took the form of a wide range of choices for cereal, boiled eggs, toast, coffee tea and juices. 5/5

, October 2015: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at St Benets Hall. Very comfortable room and quiet. Sadly no croissants left when we went down to breakfast but still lots of other foods to enjoy. Central location made sight seeing very easy. We would definitely stay again. 5/5

, October 2015: Location is brilliant. I enjoyed the 'Oxford experience' of breakfasting in the refectory. Pleased to find the coffee very acceptable - always a worry in institutional settings. Everyone I encountered was non-intrusively pleasant and I felt very comfortable and safe. Though the furnishings could be described as slightly faded and homely, I liked that. Only the provision of a mirror in the bedroom for drying hair and checking attire would have been a welcome addition. 4/5

, October 2015: We thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Our room was very good and the opportunity to talk to a couple of the fresher so was great. Thanks! 5/5

, May 2015: I would certainly book to stay at St. Benet's again. Valerie. 5/5

, May 2015: Sven is a wonderful host. We enjoyed St. Benet's and Oxford very much. 4/5

, May 2015: Room comfortable and clean, with tired decor. Would stay again, but beware overnight parking in Oxford ..it is extortionate..nothing to do with college. College bursar very helpful. 3/5

, May 2015: We had a great stay at St Benet's. The staff were friendly and breakfast at the long dining table was a fun experience! 5/5

Prof Carol M, April 2015: A fine experience. The breakfast could be improved, but everything else was great. Sven was a wonderful help. 5/5

Mr scott W, April 2015: Great location, quaint accommodations (definitely not "luxury"), very authentically historic 4/5

Mrs caroline M, April 2015: Sven, who checked us in, was such a great bloke. He was knowledgable and kind, taking time to make sure my mum had grasped how to use the security code. The room was perfect and the book shelf was superbly stocked. I would recommend this to anyone who wanted to truly experience Oxford life. 5/5

Mrs Angela M, March 2015: A very enjoyable stay. Thankyou 5/5

Dr Alyson H, February 2015: The whole experience was wonderful - and I would return here without hesitation. 5/5

Mrs Susanna H, January 2015: Very spacious room with high ceilings and 2 big windows! Very nice little sofa and desk full of nice books. 5/5

Ms Melissa H, December 2014: The room was exactly as described. Very quiet, lovely and warm. Personally I think the facilities would be improved by offering guests a hairdryer in the room. 4/5

Mr Vincent J, November 2014: Lots of character. A sense of history and time-worn elegance. 5/5

Mrs susan C, November 2014: everyone extremely kind, welcoming and helpful. beds not brilliantly comfortable but otherwise perfect for a short stay. should mention room on 2nd/3rd floor. 4/5

Mr Jens Nansen P, November 2014: Thanks for a pleasent stay! 4/5

Prof Terence W, November 2014: It was unfortunate that wifi was not available- otherwise very enjoyable visit. 4/5

Mr andrew B, November 2014: Domestic Bursar very pleasant and welcoming. 5/5

Miss Agathe C, November 2014: No one was there to let us in, despite the fact that we were there exactly between 2pm and 5pm as requested... fortunately a student opened and everything went smoothly then. The room was lovely, and in a great facility! Thanks. 4/5

Mr Julius Å, November 2014: If you want to experience true Dickensian atmosphere, authentic and lovely St Benet's hall is the place. The en suite BB guest room was spacious, romantic and beautifully decorated, with authentic if not antique furniture, even books. The pace was alive with the students who were so kind and even chatted with us. Our stay was brief but we felt welcome. Extremely friendly, everyone we met. Please take good care of this place as it isand thank you. 5/5

Mr Matt T, October 2014: I really enjoyed the experience and when I asked about where to park, I was given concise instruction on where I could leave the car. Thanks for a great experience, shame we did have a fire alarm on my visit though! 4/5

Ms Patricia E, September 2014: A beautiful old building with picturesque gardens. A good experience and such an excellent location. 4/5

Ms Elena F, September 2014: Location was good, good breakfast too. the room and bathroom seem to be quite simple for the money paid :) anyway, good place! 3/5

Mr Vincent J, September 2014: Perfect place to stay at Oxford. 4/5

Mr Matthew C, September 2014: Great location and a building full of character. Breakfast was very generous and varied. Will definitely stay here again. 5/5

Dr James B, September 2014: thank you for a really nice stay, we love visiting Oxford and hope to stay here again. Best wishes. 5/5

Ms Rose K, August 2014: Very happy with our stay. Would have preferred an en suite loo. Can't complain for the price ,though . 4/5

Mr Zhenyu W, August 2014: It's a very nice place,full suggest for everyone! 5/5

Miss Ana G, August 2014: Great buildng and warm Welcome. Room was nice size, bed linen a bit used. Great historic atmosphere and tranquil. Bit overpriced in my opinion. 3/5

Miss Yin Yin F, August 2014: Cozy stay here?If add more Oxford elements in the dorm like pictures, books and department introduction,it would be better. ^_^ 5/5

Mme. dominique D, August 2014: we had a good time in a nice atmosphere but : - furniture a little old giving a "grey atmosphere" in the bedroom. - flush in the bathroom a little "capricieuse". - two lamps on tables that did not work. The room of our two daughters 36, was more pleasant. Nevertheless, a very good experience and a warm welcoming on the day we arrived by one of the student of St Benet's college. It is also a good way to understand colleges' live in Oxford. Thank you. dominique Dheur 4/5

Ms Marianne C R, August 2014: The breakfast was generous and exceeded what I expected. The room was clean, quiet and very pleasant. I would thoroughly recommend St Benets for anyone who wants a genuine experience of Oxford - not a stuffy, noisy hotel with indifferent service! 5/5

Mr Jorn E, August 2014: Rather spartan experience - but we felt very secure :) Nice garden. 3/5

Mr Paul S, July 2014: Room was a bit hot thanks to late afternoon sun directly into the room and little circulation. Breakfast was excellent. 4/5

Mr James W, July 2014: Loved staying at St. Benet's. Just wish I was on the list of "preferred guests" so I could have stayed longer! 5/5

Mrs Waltraud G, July 2014: There were quite a few steps to climb up to the third floor, and the noise from the road bothered me in the beginning, but then got used to it. The giant tree in front of my window kept the room nice and cool while it was really hot outside. Good location, close to nearly all attractions of Oxford, even the bus stop to Blenheim Palace. 4/5

Ms Gayle O, July 2014: beautiful old building 5/5

Ms Margaret J, July 2014: A tad shabby, but overall, a good value and great location. Breakfast was fine. It was 63 steps up to our room, with 50 kilos of baggage, no lift, and for the first two nights, the shower ran cold. But all this aside, I LOVE OXFORD and will return. Many other college open their rooms to visitors, but I'll consider visiting again if they replace the threadbare carpets... (Adds to the charm, I suppose). 4/5

Mrs Barbara B, July 2014: we were very pleased with our stay at St. benet's. Room and service excellent and we enjoyed the peace and tranquility. Shower not v. good but otherwise great experience. 5/5

Ms Andrea S, July 2014: A nice room, in need of a lick of paint! This would have moved my ratings from good to excellent. Really good breakfast, and we appreciated being able to leave our cases for a few hours once we'd checked out. Thank you for an enjoyable stay. 4/5

Mr Steve L, July 2014: We had a good stay. People were friendly. This is a dorm room and spartan...sharing facilities and showers. Good downtown location for getting about. 4/5

Ms Olga B, July 2014: I had a very nice stay at St Benet's Hall. It is very close to all sites and the breakfast was very good. No wishes left at all. 4/5

Dr Petra S, July 2014: Thank you for having me! 4/5

Ms Hanna H, July 2014: I really enjoyed the experience, the breakfast was great and St Bennet's Hall is located close to the centre of Oxford. I liked the room, because it reminded me of my student years in Oxford. However, those of you, who are only used to regular B&Bs or continental student accomodation: Beware, students in Britain have to put up with smaller rooms, older furniture and shared washing facilities. 4/5

Ms Jo P, July 2014: The experience was as advertised. It was a unique and rare opportunity to be had. More guidance would be helpful for those not familiar with Oxford. Directions from the train, which bus routes are available, and so forth. We failed to find the address in the letter from Maria and that led to bus ride to the wrong area of Oxford. Fortunately, Maria stayed to check us in. Mike Davies was a warm addition to the stay. We will brag about our experience at St. Benet's. 4/5

Mr Brian L, July 2014: A pleasant stay very near the town centre. A good sized room equipped as you would expect for student accommodation. 4/5

Mr ronald C, July 2014: thank you for the opportunity to say how much we enjoyed our brief stay.we found it extremely relaxing, the bursar and the chef were very friendly and helpful.as we were very fortunate with the weather it was lovely to walk in the well appointed garden and to enjoy the tranquillity of the beautiful chapel. I would thoroughly recommend st benets to anyone looking for a peaceful place to stay in oxford. 5/5

Ms Nicola G, July 2014: I had a fabulous time and staff were so helpful! I loved the location, the quiet and the privacy. Definitely coming back... But would have loved wifi access. 4/5

Mrs Ann M, June 2014: Not only was the Hall centrally located in Oxford but it was such an interesting and authentic experience staying in student accommodation and the Master's Guest Room was especially nice - better in our opinion than a hotel room. Maria Byrne the Bursar was extremely helpful and welcoming. Breakfast was lovely too. A wonderful two day break. Thank you. 5/5

Mrs Jill W, June 2014: Perfect central location. Large room. Beautiful garden. Most enjoyable stay. 4/5

Dr Tracy C, June 2014: Lovely place. Excellent location. Very nice people. Only complaint is that guests must carry their bags up a floor or two (or three). 5/5

Dr Caroline H, June 2014: Central location in Oxford, characterful room and delicious croissants for breakfast. 4/5

Prof Thomas H, June 2014: Great experience. Thank you. 5/5

Mr Robert J, June 2014: We really enjoyed staying at St Benet's and would definitely stay there again. We would also recommend it to our friends. Very spacious room with a nice view of the back garden area. Quiet, comfortable and private. We did not eat there, so cannot comment on standard of breakfast. 4/5

Mr Andrew H, June 2014: Convenient, hassle-free, welcoming, unobtrusive service. Nice room. 5/5

Mr Roger C, May 2014: Excellent experience. Lovely room with wonderful furniture and views over St Giles. Perfect location both for city centre and Jericho. My daughter found having breakfast in the dining hall with the students a very interesting experience. Will definitely return with my wife and take in vespers or complin...or both. The only hiccough was the cold shower. In fact it did bother us too much as it was quite bracing, but perhaps should be fixed. It is a great place to stay though. 4/5

Dr Peter S, May 2014: Basic, as honestly advertised. Excellent location, could not be more central in the university area. And available during term, as the colleges are not. Recommended. 4/5

Mrs SUSAN T, May 2014: We enjoyed our stay - a bit of a special experience. It was a beautiful building and we liked our room which overlooked the lovely garden very much. Breakfast absolutely fine. Only negatives were that it was quite expensive and shower a bit feeble. 4/5

Mrs Janet C, May 2014: Very comfortable accommodation with an authentic 'college' feel - close to Museums, Colleges, Theatre etc and a very good base from which to explore Oxford. 4/5

Mrs Denise L, May 2014: My teenage daughter and I had a lovely stay at St Benet's. The room was spacious, clean and warm. It was quiet and homely too. Everyone was helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the opportunity to "feel" like we were part of the university! We will definitely be back! 4/5

Ms Kathryn G, April 2014: I was delighted with the warmth of the welcome, helpfulness, kindness and friendliness of the staff at St Benet's. Excellent breakfast and value for money. I left one day earlier than anticpiated but left the money for the college as a donation by way of thank-you. Kathryn 5/5

Mrs Melanie H, April 2014: Clean and comfortable twin ensuite. Enjoyed the stay. 4/5

Mr Benedict O, March 2014: It was a very pleasant place to stay. Simple and sufficiently comfortable. There was mould in the top bathroom. 4/5

Ms Attracta C, March 2014: Pleasant , interesting ........good place to stay 4/5

Mr Mohammed H, March 2014: My pleasure speaking to the reservation staff who was very helpful. I enjoyed my stay even though short. 4/5

Dr Julie W, March 2014: Would certainly book again if we were to return to Oxford. 4/5

Dr Paul M, March 2014: Friendly welcome to quiet and peaceful St Benet's in the heart of Oxford. Clean and airy good-sized room overlooking busy St Giles. Enjoyable stay, thank you, 4/5

Mrs Laura D, February 2014: Staying in St Benet's Hall enhanced our visit to Oxford, by giving us an insight into university life. Should we visit Oxford again, we would definitely stay there! 5/5

Dr Laurie K, January 2014: We stayed at St. Benets for four nights in December, 2013, as a family group of four adults in two rooms. We were very pleased with the facility and the location. The rooms were clean, comfortable and very quiet. The building was simple but elegant. Breakfasts were simple but very good, and the pastries were beyond excellent. We were delighted to have the use of the school facilities for doing some laundry. We enjoyed meeting the other guests and the chef; school was not in session during our stay, so we didn't meet the students. The only problem we had was that the stairs were hard for one member of our party, who is not in good shape. We decided it was good exercise for him, but guests who have serious disabilities would find the stairs a problem. There was no weekend room cleaning/service. Overall, our experience was very satisfactory and we will stay at St Benets again if we visit Oxford. 4/5

Dr Leander R, January 2014: Quiet, large and comfortable room, lovely view looking out to the garden. Good value. 5/5

Dr Tom L, January 2014: Lovely clean bright and airy room. Central location. Good service. Would highly recommend. Stayed as a coupe attending a wedding. 4/5

Mrs Lorna S, December 2013: A lovely, comfortable night. 4/5

Miss Qi Y, December 2013: It's great to have college living experience. Better than most hotels. 3/5

Mrs Ursula F, November 2013: Comfortable atmosphere, very authentic environment. We enjoyed our stay at St. Benet's Hall. 3/5

Ms Ramani L, September 2013: The rooms were perfectly adequate if not glamorous! Third floor with no lift was a bit much with luggage but for the price this is fantastic value for the middle of Oxford. Staggering distance from the event we attended in college. We would definitely stay again. 4/5

Ms lindsay H, September 2013: Have already recommended St Benet's to friends whose daughter is about to start Oxford. SO much nicer than a hotel. Would love to return. 5/5

Mr Ed W, September 2013: we had a very nice stay in the college! Thank you. 5/5

Mr James D, September 2013: If you're looking for simplicity, quiet and a refuge amidst all the goings of Oxford, this is for you. 4/5

Mr David W, June 2013: Really terrific - we didn't have the breakfast as we wanted to have a cooked breakfast and you only offer a continental breakfast. That is the only thing that could improve the experience. Thank you. 4/5

Dr David G, May 2013: The staff were exceptionally attentive! My room was (through an admin oversight) not ready when I checked in at 300pm....the Junior Dean couldn't have been more apologetic (and proferred a complimentary bottle of wine as a token) and the cleaning staff zoomed in very quickly...within 10 minutes the issue had been resolved. Impressive! 5/5

Mr Xiaodong Y, April 2013: The staff member is very friendly and efficient. 4/5

Mr Simon S, February 2013: Hello, Thank you for an excellent stay at St Benet's. The chap who let us in was very welcoming and friendly. The room was just what we expected but with a wide view, a bonus. Breakfast was fine for me, but I suspect some guests might want more.. more variety and more quality (of coffee, toast, etc). We saw one member of staff during breakfast; she was very friendly but again, some other guests might want more attention during breakfast! I liked having the papers there - a nice touch. Hope this is a useful comment, and thanks for a lovely stay... helped us a lot during the OU Walking Club reunion weekend. Cheers Simon and Ailsa (ex-Teddy Hall and Keble respectively) 3/5

Mr Davor A, October 2012: If you can find beauty in modesty, and enjoy serenity, you will probably find this accommodation very agreeable. I have enjoyed my stay and will definitely return. 5/5

Mr Richard G, October 2012: It was a lovely stay that I would again, albeit, a lower floor. Cheers. 4/5

Mrs E P E, September 2012: We were expecting basic student accommodation and so were really pleased with basic but clean rooms friendly welcome on arrival & use of lovely garden breakfast was basic. Location fantastic would recommend & be very happy to stay again Mend 4/5

Mrs Nicola P, September 2012: Really lovely place to stay. Beautiful garden. 5/5

Miss Alison W, September 2012: The steward who greeted us on arrival was very helpful and friendly, sorry I cant remember his name! 4/5

Ms Sandra L, July 2012: We found the welcome extremely friendly and the calefactory most comfortable. 4/5

Mr David E, July 2012: The staff was courteous and helpful. The location was excellent. It was nice and quiet - the perfect accommodations for me. I'd certainly stay at St. Benet's Hall again. I really enjoyed reading some of the literature and looking at photos on the walls - you really do learn a bit about St. Benet's that you wouldn't acquire otherwise. Proximity to Eagle and Child also a nice feature. 5/5

Ms Cynthia C, June 2012: Excellent central location with the lovely students and staff of St. Benet's. Very lovely quiet room with great view of garden. Homey antique furniture and a bookshelf filled with books. This is a college with a religious slant so be prepared to see priests around. No internet and had to carry luggage up 3 flights of stairs but this was well advertised in advance. Overall great value for money with an unbeatable safe and quiet location in city center. 5/5

Dr Caroline P, April 2012: A warm welcome and a very comfortable, pleasant room. 5/5

Ms Shiyin C, April 2012: Great service and very friendly staff. Extremely clean. Nice living and study area. But no room service on the second day which was unexpected. 4/5

Mr Paul T, January 2012: We enjoyed our stay very much. The room was large, comfortable, clean and quiet. The college is conveniently situated for the city centre. Would be happy to return. 4/5

Mr Arthur G, October 2011: My week in Oxford was a memorable experience. The accommodation and friendly service at St Benet's was top class. 5/5

Mr Paul S, October 2011: Excellent and relaxing, really enjoyed our stay. 4/5

Mr Christopher R, October 2011: Had a very good stay and hope to return again. Staff was friendly. Furnishings were a bit tatty but the room was mostly quiet and cozy. Preferred to have breakfast out. A number of good bakeries are just around the corner. Great pubs and restaurants too. The Bodleian library and city centre are just five minutes away. Train station is walking distance. Neighborhood is off the tourist circuit, though. So an excellent location! 4/5

Dr Brian T, September 2011: We enjoyed our stay at St. Benet's. The room was basic but adequate (as is to be expected in a college dorm room) with en suite shower, toilet was shared with one other room. The staff was very pleasant and helpful both before and during our stay. All in all, a very good experience. 5/5

Ms Eleonore F, September 2011: St Benet's Hall is a very good option for a short stay in Oxford - great location, cute rooms and friendly staff. It's also wonderful to have access to a nice piano and a great library. 5/5

Mrs Lindsey A, September 2011: Really welcoming and helpful upon arrival. Perfect location for the centre of Oxford, would definitely stay again. 4/5

Mr Christopher L, September 2011: I would definitely stay here again -great location and you are made to feel very welcome 4/5

Miss Yvonne B, September 2011: Great! Really feels like you're staying at a college. 5/5

Tania M, September 2011: I really enjoyed my experience staying at St. Benet's Hall, thank you! 4/5

Ms Amanda V, April 2011: We had a wonderful stay at St Benets. I recommend it to anyone. The location is wonderful, 2 mins from Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers museums. Supermarkets 5 mins walk. The Eagle and Child pub just a few doors down the road. We thoroughly enjoyed it. 5/5

Mr Adrian S, April 2011: We'll be back; an excellent place to stay, and thoroughly welcoming. Cannot be faulted. Thoughtful, peaceful, and serene! 5/5

Ms Mei Ling G, April 2011: Though accommodation is basic it is clean and neat. Thank you for the hard work in keeping room clean and neat. 3/5

Miss Amela T, April 2011: Excellent location, right in the centre of Oxford. The room I stayed in was a bit spartan and tired, but clean and perfectly comfortable. The hike to the fourth floor might be off-putting for some. Breakfast was simple but plentiful: toast and condiments, croissants, several types of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, boiled eggs (only on one of the days). The college secretary and deputy master (responsible for welcoming guests and distributing keys) were extremely helpful and nice: they were able to accomodate my late (10:30PM) arrival without a problem. 4/5

Dr Nakeisha F, April 2011: We had a great experience at St. Benet's. 5/5

Lynley M, March 2011: Thank you for all your help! I had a nice stay. 4/5

Dr. Alan B, January 2011: An extremely quiet, peaceful, and clean place, in an excellent location in Oxford, and very good value for money. 4/5

Patrick D, October 2010: A really delightful place to stay. In the middle of town, but quiet, with an attractive garden view. We shall definitely be returning. 4/5
