History to the present day
St Benet’s Hall is owned by the monastic community of St Lawrence at Ampleforth Abbey in Yorkshire – currently the largest monastery in the UK. In its earliest medieval form, the University of Oxford comprised a few Houses of study, with students gathered around a Master. St Benet’s, founded in 1897, stands proud as the closest institution in Oxford to these medieval Halls. The maintenance of these traditions means that St Benet’s preserves the best of Old Oxford and a wonderful family atmosphere.
Food and Drinks
A self-service continental style breakfast is available in the ground floor Refectory from 8.00am to 9.30am every morning. If you have any particular dietary requirements, please let us know beforehand by entering these details in the "additional information" section of your booking form. Stepping outside the Hall, you will find many good restaurants, pubs, cafes and delicatessens in the surrounding area.

Ms Melissa Highton, December 2014: The room was exactly as described. Very quiet, lovely and warm. Personally I think the facilities would be improved by offering guests a hairdryer in the room.
Mr Vincent Johnson, November 2014: Lots of character. A sense of history and time-worn elegance.
Mrs susan croft, November 2014: everyone extremely kind, welcoming and helpful. beds not brilliantly comfortable but otherwise perfect for a short stay. should mention room on 2nd/3rd floor.
Mr Jens Nansen Paulsen, November 2014: Thanks for a pleasent stay!
Prof Terence Wright, November 2014: It was unfortunate that wifi was not available- otherwise very enjoyable visit.
Mr andrew botterill, November 2014: Domestic Bursar very pleasant and welcoming.
Miss Agathe Cury, November 2014: No one was there to let us in, despite the fact that we were there exactly between 2pm and 5pm as requested... fortunately a student opened and everything went smoothly then. The room was lovely, and in a great facility!
Mr Julius Åberg, November 2014: If you want to experience true Dickensian atmosphere, authentic and lovely St Benet's hall is the place. The en suite BB guest room was spacious, romantic and beautifully decorated, with authentic if not antique furniture, even books. The pace was alive with the students who were so kind and even chatted with us. Our stay was brief but we felt welcome. Extremely friendly, everyone we met. Please take good care of this place as it isand thank you.
Mr Matt Thorne, October 2014: I really enjoyed the experience and when I asked about where to park, I was given concise instruction on where I could leave the car. Thanks for a great experience, shame we did have a fire alarm on my visit though!
Ms Patricia Edge, September 2014: A beautiful old building with picturesque gardens. A good experience and such an excellent location.
Ms Elena Fadeeva, September 2014: Location was good, good breakfast too. the room and bathroom seem to be quite simple for the money paid :) anyway, good place!
Mr Vincent Johnson, September 2014: Perfect place to stay at Oxford.
Mr Matthew Cornford, September 2014: Great location and a building full of character. Breakfast was very generous and varied. Will definitely stay here again.
Dr James Bull, September 2014: thank you for a really nice stay, we love visiting Oxford and hope to stay here again. Best wishes.
Ms Rose Kelly, August 2014: Very happy with our stay. Would have preferred an en suite loo. Can't complain for the price ,though .
Mr Zhenyu Wang, August 2014: It's a very nice place, full suggest for everyone!
Miss Ana Gonzalez, August 2014: Great buildng and warm Welcome. Room was nice size, bed linen a bit used. Great historic atmosphere and tranquil. Bit overpriced in my opinion.
Miss Yin Yin Fu, August 2014: Cozy stay here?If add more Oxford elements in the dorm like pictures, books and department introduction,it would be better. ^_^
Mme. dominique dheur, August 2014: we had a good time in a nice atmosphere but :
- furniture a little old giving a "grey atmosphere" in the bedroom.
- flush in the bathroom a little "capricieuse".
- two lamps on tables that did not work.
The room of our two daughters 36, was more pleasant.
Nevertheless, a very good experience and a warm welcoming on the day we arrived by one of the student of St Benet's college.
It is also a good way to understand colleges' live in Oxford.
Ms Marianne C Richards, August 2014: The breakfast was generous and exceeded what I expected. The room was clean, quiet and very pleasant. I would thoroughly recommend St Benets for anyone who wants a genuine experience of Oxford - not a stuffy, noisy hotel with indifferent service!
Mr Jorn Engvang, August 2014: Rather spartan experience - but we felt very secure :) Nice garden.
Mr Paul Smith, July 2014: Room was a bit hot thanks to late afternoon sun directly into the room and little circulation. Breakfast was excellent.
Mr James WARD, July 2014: Loved staying at St. Benet's. Just wish I was on the list of "preferred guests" so I could have stayed longer!
Mrs Waltraud Gasch, July 2014: There were quite a few steps to climb up to the third floor, and the noise from the road bothered me in the beginning, but then got used to it. The giant tree in front of my window kept the room nice and cool while it was really hot outside. Good location, close to nearly all attractions of Oxford, even the bus stop to Blenheim Palace.
Ms Gayle Owens, July 2014: beautiful old building
Ms Margaret Jones, July 2014: A tad shabby, but overall, a good value and great location. Breakfast was fine. It was 63 steps up to our room, with 50 kilos of baggage, no lift, and for the first two nights, the shower ran cold. But all this aside, I LOVE OXFORD and will return. Many other college open their rooms to visitors, but I'll consider visiting again if they replace the threadbare carpets... (Adds to the charm, I suppose).
Mrs Barbara Beeden, July 2014: we were very pleased with our stay at St. benet's. Room and service excellent and we enjoyed the peace and tranquility. Shower not v. good but otherwise great experience.
Ms Andrea Stafford, July 2014: A nice room, in need of a lick of paint! This would have moved my ratings from good to excellent. Really good breakfast, and we appreciated being able to leave our cases for a few hours once we'd checked out. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.
Mr Steve Lotz, July 2014: We had a good stay. People were friendly. This is a dorm room and spartan...sharing facilities and showers. Good downtown location for getting about.
Ms Olga Blank, July 2014: I had a very nice stay at St Benet's Hall. It is very close to all sites and the breakfast was very good. No wishes left at all.
Dr Petra Schmidl, July 2014: Thank you for having me!
Ms Hanna Högenauer, July 2014: I really enjoyed the experience, the breakfast was great and St Bennet's Hall is located close to the centre of Oxford. I liked the room, because it reminded me of my student years in Oxford. However, those of you, who are only used to regular B&Bs or continental student accomodation: Beware, students in Britain have to put up with smaller rooms, older furniture and shared washing facilities.
Ms Jo Patrick, July 2014: The experience was as advertised. It was a unique and rare opportunity to be had. More guidance would be helpful for those not familiar with Oxford. Directions from the train, which bus routes are available, and so forth. We failed to find the address in the letter from Maria and that led to bus ride to the wrong area of Oxford. Fortunately, Maria stayed to check us in. Mike Davies was a warm addition to the stay. We will brag about our experience at St. Benet's.
Mr Brian Lippard, July 2014: A pleasant stay very near the town centre. A good sized room equipped as you would expect for student accommodation.
Mr ronald cain, July 2014: thank you for the opportunity to say how much we enjoyed our brief stay.we found it extremely relaxing, the bursar and the chef were very friendly and helpful.as we were very fortunate with the weather it was lovely to walk in the well appointed garden and to enjoy the tranquillity of the beautiful chapel.
I would thoroughly recommend st benets to anyone looking for a peaceful place to stay in oxford.
Ms Nicola Greenberg, July 2014: I had a fabulous time and staff were so helpful! I loved the location, the quiet and the privacy. Definitely coming back... But would have loved wifi access.
Mrs Ann Munro, June 2014: Not only was the Hall centrally located in Oxford but it was such an interesting and authentic experience staying in student accommodation and the Master's Guest Room was especially nice - better in our opinion than a hotel room. Maria Byrne the Bursar was extremely helpful and welcoming. Breakfast was lovely too. A wonderful two day break. Thank you.
Mrs Jill Ware, June 2014: Perfect central location. Large room. Beautiful garden. Most enjoyable stay.
Dr Tracy Camp, June 2014: Lovely place. Excellent location. Very nice people. Only complaint is that guests must carry their bags up a floor or two (or three).
Dr Caroline Humphrey, June 2014: Central location in Oxford, characterful room and delicious croissants for breakfast.
Prof Thomas Hutton, June 2014: Great experience. Thank you.
Mr Robert Jarratt, June 2014: We really enjoyed staying at St Benet's and would definitely stay there again. We would also recommend it to our friends. Very spacious room with a nice view of the back garden area. Quiet, comfortable and private. We did not eat there, so cannot comment on standard of breakfast.
Mr Andrew Hodgson, June 2014: Convenient, hassle-free, welcoming, unobtrusive service. Nice room.
Mr Roger Clayton, May 2014: Excellent experience. Lovely room with wonderful furniture and views over St Giles. Perfect location both for city centre and Jericho. My daughter found having breakfast in the dining hall with the students a very interesting experience. Will definitely return with my wife and take in vespers or complin...or both. The only hiccough was the cold shower. In fact it did bother us too much as it was quite bracing, but perhaps should be fixed. It is a great place to stay though.
Dr Peter Scharbach, May 2014: Basic, as honestly advertised. Excellent location, could not be more central in the university area. And available during term, as the colleges are not. Recommended.
Mrs SUSAN THACKER, May 2014: We enjoyed our stay - a bit of a special experience. It was a beautiful building and we liked our room which overlooked the lovely garden very much. Breakfast absolutely fine. Only negatives were that it was quite expensive and shower a bit feeble.
Mrs Janet Cragg, May 2014: Very comfortable accommodation with an authentic 'college' feel - close to Museums, Colleges, Theatre etc and a very good base from which to explore Oxford.
Mrs Denise Lai, May 2014: My teenage daughter and I had a lovely stay at St Benet's. The room was spacious, clean and warm. It was quiet and homely too. Everyone was helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the opportunity to "feel" like we were part of the university! We will definitely be back!
Ms Kathryn Gostling, April 2014: I was delighted with the warmth of the welcome, helpfulness, kindness and friendliness of the staff at St Benet's. Excellent breakfast and value for money. I left one day earlier than anticpiated but left the money for the college as a donation by way of thank-you. Kathryn
Mrs Melanie Harriss, April 2014: Clean and comfortable twin ensuite. Enjoyed the stay.
Mr Benedict O'Connor, March 2014: It was a very pleasant place to stay. Simple and sufficiently comfortable. There was mould in the top bathroom.
Ms Attracta Craig, March 2014: Pleasant , interesting ........good place to stay
Mr Mohammed Hafiz, March 2014: My pleasure speaking to the reservation staff who was very helpful. I enjoyed my stay even though short.
Dr Julie Watt, March 2014: Would certainly book again if we were to return to Oxford.
Dr Paul Mitchell, March 2014: Friendly welcome to quiet and peaceful St Benet's in the heart of Oxford. Clean and airy good-sized room overlooking busy St Giles. Enjoyable stay, thank you,
Mrs Laura Davies, February 2014: Staying in St Benet's Hall enhanced our visit to Oxford, by giving us an insight into university life. Should we visit Oxford again, we would definitely stay there!
Dr Laurie Klein, January 2014: We stayed at St. Benets for four nights in December, 2013, as a family group of four adults in two rooms. We were very pleased with the facility and the location. The rooms were clean, comfortable and very quiet. The building was simple but elegant. Breakfasts were simple but very good, and the pastries were beyond excellent. We were delighted to have the use of the school facilities for doing some laundry. We enjoyed meeting the other guests and the chef; school was not in session during our stay, so we didn't meet the students. The only problem we had was that the stairs were hard for one member of our party, who is not in good shape. We decided it was good exercise for him, but guests who have serious disabilities would find the stairs a problem. There was no weekend room cleaning/service. Overall, our experience was very satisfactory and we will stay at St Benets again if we visit Oxford.
Dr Leander Rathsam, January 2014: Quiet, large and comfortable room, lovely view looking out to the garden. Good value.
Dr Tom Lawy, January 2014: Lovely clean bright and airy room. Central location. Good service. Would highly recommend. Stayed as a coupe attending a wedding.
Mrs Lorna Swain, December 2013: A lovely, comfortable night.
Miss Qi Yue, December 2013: It's great to have college living experience. Better than most hotels.
Mrs Ursula Fackler, November 2013: Comfortable atmosphere, very authentic environment. We enjoyed our stay at St. Benet's Hall.
Ms Ramani Langley, September 2013: The rooms were perfectly adequate if not glamorous! Third floor with no lift was a bit much with luggage but for the price this is fantastic value for the middle of Oxford. Staggering distance from the event we attended in college. We would definitely stay again.
Ms lindsay hall, September 2013: Have already recommended St Benet's to friends whose daughter is about to start Oxford. SO much nicer than a hotel. Would love to return.
Mr Ed Winfield, September 2013: we had a very nice stay in the college! Thank you.
Mr James Donahue, September 2013: If you're looking for simplicity, quiet and a refuge amidst all the goings of Oxford, this is for you.
Mr David White, June 2013: Really terrific - we didn't have the breakfast as we wanted to have a cooked breakfast and you only offer a continental breakfast. That is the only thing that could improve the experience. Thank you.
Dr David Goldberg, May 2013: The staff were exceptionally attentive! My room was (through an admin oversight) not ready when I checked in at 300pm....the Junior Dean couldn't have been more apologetic (and proferred a complimentary bottle of wine as a token) and the cleaning staff zoomed in very quickly...within 10 minutes the issue had been resolved. Impressive!
Mr Xiaodong Yang, April 2013: The staff member is very friendly and efficient.
Mr Simon Stevens, February 2013: Hello,
Thank you for an excellent stay at St Benet's. The chap who let us in was very welcoming and friendly. The room was just what we expected but with a wide view, a bonus. Breakfast was fine for me, but I suspect some guests might want more.. more variety and more quality (of coffee, toast, etc). We saw one member of staff during breakfast; she was very friendly but again, some other guests might want more attention during breakfast! I liked having the papers there - a nice touch.
Hope this is a useful comment, and thanks for a lovely stay... helped us a lot during the OU Walking Club reunion weekend.
Simon and Ailsa (ex-Teddy Hall and Keble respectively)
Mr Davor Aslanovski, October 2012: If you can find beauty in modesty, and enjoy serenity, you will probably find this accommodation very agreeable. I have enjoyed my stay and will definitely return.
Mr Richard Gilmour, October 2012: It was a lovely stay that I would again, albeit, a lower floor. Cheers.
Mrs E P ELKINS, September 2012: We were expecting basic student accommodation and so were really pleased with basic but clean rooms friendly welcome on arrival & use of lovely garden breakfast was basic. Location fantastic would recommend & be very happy to stay again
Mrs Nicola Perry, September 2012: Really lovely place to stay. Beautiful garden.
Miss Alison Warren, September 2012: The steward who greeted us on arrival was very helpful and friendly, sorry I cant remember his name!
Ms Sandra Law, July 2012: We found the welcome extremely friendly and the calefactory most comfortable.
Mr David Evans, July 2012: The staff was courteous and helpful. The location was excellent. It was nice and quiet - the perfect accommodations for me. I'd certainly stay at St. Benet's Hall again. I really enjoyed reading some of the literature and looking at photos on the walls - you really do learn a bit about St. Benet's that you wouldn't acquire otherwise. Proximity to Eagle and Child also a nice feature.
Ms Cynthia Chang, June 2012: Excellent central location with the lovely students and staff of St. Benet's. Very lovely quiet room with great view of garden. Homey antique furniture and a bookshelf filled with books. This is a college with a religious slant so be prepared to see priests around. No internet and had to carry luggage up 3 flights of stairs but this was well advertised in advance. Overall great value for money with an unbeatable safe and quiet location in city center.
Dr Caroline Pung, April 2012: A warm welcome and a very comfortable, pleasant room.
Ms Shiyin Cai, April 2012: Great service and very friendly staff. Extremely clean. Nice living and study area. But no room service on the second day which was unexpected.
Mr Paul Tarry, January 2012: We enjoyed our stay very much. The room was large, comfortable, clean and quiet. The college is conveniently situated for the city centre. Would be happy to return.
Mr Arthur Gammage, October 2011: My week in Oxford was a memorable experience. The accommodation and friendly service at St Benet's was top class.
Mr Paul Shields, October 2011: Excellent and relaxing, really enjoyed our stay.
Mr Christopher ROBINSON, October 2011: Had a very good stay and hope to return again. Staff was friendly. Furnishings were a bit tatty but the room was mostly quiet and cozy. Preferred to have breakfast out. A number of good bakeries are just around the corner. Great pubs and restaurants too. The Bodleian library and city centre are just five minutes away. Train station is walking distance. Neighborhood is off the tourist circuit, though. So an excellent location!
Dr Brian Tulloch, September 2011: We enjoyed our stay at St. Benet's. The room was basic but adequate (as is to be expected in a college dorm room) with en suite shower, toilet was shared with one other room. The staff was very pleasant and helpful both before and during our stay. All in all, a very good experience.
Ms Eleonore Fournier-Tombs, September 2011: St Benet's Hall is a very good option for a short stay in Oxford - great location, cute rooms and friendly staff. It's also wonderful to have access to a nice piano and a great library.
Mrs Lindsey Alexander, September 2011: Really welcoming and helpful upon arrival. Perfect location for the centre of Oxford, would definitely stay again.

Tania Myles, September 2011: I really enjoyed my experience staying at St. Benet's Hall, thank you!
Ms Amanda Vogel, April 2011: We had a wonderful stay at St Benets. I recommend it to anyone. The location is wonderful, 2 mins from Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers museums. Supermarkets 5 mins walk. The Eagle and Child pub just a few doors down the road. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Mr Adrian Stabler, April 2011: We'll be back; an excellent place to stay, and thoroughly welcoming. Cannot be faulted. Thoughtful, peaceful, and serene!
Ms Mei Ling Gay, April 2011: Though accommodation is basic it is clean and neat. Thank you for the hard work in keeping room clean and neat.
Miss Amela Trhulj, April 2011: Excellent location, right in the centre of Oxford. The room I stayed in was a bit spartan and tired, but clean and perfectly comfortable. The hike to the fourth floor might be off-putting for some. Breakfast was simple but plentiful: toast and condiments, croissants, several types of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, boiled eggs (only on one of the days). The college secretary and deputy master (responsible for welcoming guests and distributing keys) were extremely helpful and nice: they were able to accomodate my late (10:30PM) arrival without a problem.
Dr Nakeisha Ferguson, April 2011: We had a great experience at St. Benet's.
Lynley McAlpine, March 2011: Thank you for all your help! I had a nice stay.
Dr. Alan Brain, January 2011: An extremely quiet, peaceful, and clean place, in an excellent location in Oxford, and very good value for money.
Elisabeth Goodridge, November 2010: Very pleasant stay: fantastic location, comfortable beds and exceptionally helpful staff.
April Kidd, October 2010: The room was very nice, breakfast was wonderful, and Wendy Bunning was exceptionally kind, friendly, and helpful. Wendy welcomed us warmly and took the time to familiarize us with St. Benet's. Our brief stay was wonderful. Thank you!
Patrick Devlin, October 2010: A really delightful place to stay. In the middle of town, but quiet, with an attractive garden view.
We shall definitely be returning.
