An Introduction to Bangor

Bangor is a city in Gwynedd unitary authority, northwest Wales. It is the oldest city in Wales and one of the UK's smallest cities. Historically, it is known as a university city, with over half of its population being students. The city allegedly has the longest High Street in Wales and the United Kingdom.

Getting to Bangor

By Car:

From London - Get on the M1 from A4201, Outer Cir, Avenue Road and A41, Continue on M1. Take M6, M6 Toll, M6 and M56 to Bypass Rd/A494 in Cheshire West and Chester. Take North Wales Expry/A55 to Deiniol Rd/A5 in Bangor

Exit the A55 at junction 9 and follow the signs to Ysbyty Gwynedd (Gwynedd Hospital). Do not turn into the hospital but continue straight ahead for 1 kilometre. At the first roundabout, turn left up the hill (Belmont Road). After 250 meters, turn right onto Ffriddoedd Road. When you see Coleg Menai sites on your right, turn left up the drive to Neuadd Reichel (signposted).

By Train: There are regular trains to Bangor from London Euston in the South and Manchester and Liverpool in the North, which changes taking place at Chester. The accommodation is a 10-minute walk from Bangor train station.

Bangor is unique as one of the only populated areas outside of England in using the title of 'city' by ancient prescriptive right. However, city status was officially conferred on it by the Queen in 1974. The city originates from the founding of a monastery on the site of Bangor Cathedral. University College of North Wales (now Bangor University) was founded in 1884.

In 1967, The Beatles came to Bangor, staying in Dyfrdwy, one of the halls comprising Adeilad Hugh Owen (Hugh Owen Building), now part of the Management Centre, for their first encounter with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
