Getting to Leeds

Geschichte von Leeds

Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Leeds can trace its recorded history to fifth century when the Kingdom of Elmet was covered by the forest of "Loidis", the origin of the name Leeds. In the 17th and 18th centuries Leeds became a major centre for the production and trading of wool. Then, during the Industrial Revolution, Leeds developed into a major industrial centre; wool was still the dominant industry but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing and other industries were important. From being a compact market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.

Leeds: the university

The University of Leeds is a major teaching and research university in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire. With over 33,000 full-time students, the university is the second largest single site university in the United Kingdom. Dating back to the establishment of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and consolidated as a university in 1904, it is one of the six original civic 'red brick' universities, and in 2006 was ranked second in the UK for the number of applications received.

Lovely surroundings and comfortable stay. Our only negative was that one room had stains on the pillowcase and human hair on the pillows and bathroom. We were disappointed not to have been informed that the Refractory and food counters were shut on a weekend - so this was an unwelcome surprise on Sat morning.

Excellent experience. My bookings were handled well including changes. Not everything could be done online but I was able to get assistance through email. My only complaint about the room was that it was very warm and that made sleeping difficult. I did have the window open sometimes but I had to balance temperature with street noise. Thank you.

The academics (who were running the course I was taking) seemed surprised to learn that I'd been able to stay in university accommodation - you might want to consider a general email advertising the service (making it clear what times of year it will be available).

Absolutely excellent value for money, and good facilities too. Whole process is excellent. This was a return visit (one of several), and there will be more. I wish we had facilities like this when I was a student there!

Perfect for what I need. Working as an IT Contractor at the University, the location couldn't be better and the rooms, for the price, are perfectly OK. Only problem at this time of year is the Refectory closing early with not a great deal of time between breakfast and lunch... Otherwise, no problems and am staying here again week commencing July 16th.

The guys on the front desk were very welcoming and helpful. They guided us to a local restaurant for food as we arrived late at 9.30pm and most places were closed. We would book again.

problems with the internet not working on the day I arrived. it would have been nice to have been told that the rooms/leeds has limited/no orange phone reception - very hard to work when there is no phone reception and the internet wasn't always available!! otherwise, lovely place to stay and would consider staying again. the staff were all wonderful!

Everything was excellent except the people in the next room were very noisy, seem to be having a party and were shouting and banging doors until after 5.00 am.

I'm so glad I stumbled across this website - great room and a comfy bed at an extremely reasonable price (although in-room internet left a lot to be desired). Would definitely use again!
