History to the present day
The College transferred to Oxford from Birmingham in 1886 and became a Free Church centre for the study of theology, preparing students from any dissenting denomination for the ministry.
Building work began on the current college site, which was purchased from Merton College in October 1886 and was completed at a cost of £40,000 in October 1889. The original Gothic style buildings are regarded as amongst the finest work of the prominent Victorian Architect Basil Champneys.
Mansfield admitted its first female student, Constance Todd, who later became the first woman to be ordained to the Christian ministry in Britain in 1913.
Mansfield College became a Permanent Private Hall in 1955 and received a Royal Charter in 1995, becoming a full college of the University of Oxford.
The College is a small, friendly college with about 400 students and 70 staff, some of which belong to the Senior Common Room. It has a reputation within and beyond Oxford of encouraging applications from the state sector and in particular from students in Further Education.
