Overview

The Alegre Hotel is a delightful, intimate, family run boutique hotel nested in the peaceful woodlands of Luso spa and the Bussaco national forest with views over the village and the Bussaco mountains. A wellness retreat in the centre of Portugal, just 20 Km north of the University city of Coimbra, 2 hours from Lisbon and 45 Minutes from Oporto International Airport and city.

This small town just north of Coimbra is world famous for it's water. Agua de Luso is synonymous with good quality mineral water in Portugal, and thousands of bottles are consumed daily across the nation. The water flows freely from fountains and springs in the town which is renowned for its healing qualities, making Luso one of Portugal’s most important spa towns. 

The hotel is perfect for guests eager to get away from it all and find a laid back retreat to recharge the batteries! The 18 guestrooms have all been designed and decorated with comfort and convenience of the guest foremost in mind. Rooms are available as double or triple rooms, some with balconies and deep bath tubs and or showers. Intercommunicating rooms are available for families with additional roll away beds available.


History

The hotel was built in 1859 to be the summer residence of the Count of Graciosa and it was the first manor house to ever been built in Luso. Set to be a hotel unit since 1939, it has been managed by the Alegre family ever since then.

Food & beverage

A Continential breakfast is included in your room price and is available with a selection of breakfast items and is served in the elegant dining area with high ceilings and period features. Bar service is available during summer near the pool site.

Several restaurants with wonderful food are available within walking distance and Coimbra city restaurants are only 25Km distance away and the city of Mealhada famous for its roasted suckling pig and the Bairrada wine. 

Grounds & Gardens

The hotel is situated only a 100 meters away from Bussaco National Park, which is full of exotic trees brought from overseas by the Portuguese sailors, cold springs of crystalline water and dramatic view points over the sea line.

It was a closed park until the early XIX Century, used for meditation by monks of a Spanish religious order (Carmelites) that build its monastery and a collection of small chapels with special permission of Felipe III of Spain (Felipe II of Portugal).

Other facilities

All bedrooms include climate control, daily housekeeping, private bathroom, hair dryer, television, telephone, rollaway/extra beds available and blackout drapes/curtains to ensure you have a good night's sleep.

The lobby features a fireplace, safe and TV. Reception is open during limited hours only. Free Wi-Fi is provided. The hotel has a meeting room available for hire. Other amenities include concierge services, laundry facilities and a computer station.

Guests may enjoy the hotel's swimming pool in the warmer months with sun loungers to relax in the sun.

Directions:

By Car: 

From the A1.15 Km north of Coimbra  exit at the sign for Mealhada/Luso/Bussaco/ Cantanhede. After leaving the highway drive straight on until the road ends in a roundabout and turn left in the direction of Oporto. At the 4th roundabout,  signposted "Luso" ,turn right and drive 5Km more until you enter Luso village. After the traffic light, turn right and enter the village centre. Drive straight on, pass the church and the Tourism Office and the pink hotel is on the hill on your right. Drive straight on and after the taxi rank, turn right. On the next crossroads you’ll find another light sign. Bear left at the private parking sign (50metres). Don’t forget to leave your luggage in the car until you have made check in – someone will help you after to take it to your room. By Train: Lisbon to Oporto passes through Mealhada (5 Km from the Hotel). At Mealhada take a taxi to the hotel or contact the hotel who will arrange for a taxi to meet you.
