The Compasses is a classic, East Anglian, traditional country local pub. The friendly bar has brown-painted panelling and wall benches, plain chairs and tables on quarry tiles, and chat and laughter rather than piped music as the backdrop. There's a piano, darts and board games in one side room, and decorative mugs hanging from beams in another.
A fine range of ales includes Bishop Nick Ridley's Rite (brewed in Braintree by the landlord's brother) tapped from casks in a half cellar. In summer and at Christmas we hold beer festivals featuring dozens of beers, alongside events that include vintage ploughing in the field opposite. All the reasonably priced food is freshly prepared and includes the Essex Huffer - a traditional triangular shaped bap stuffed with a selection of fillings. Picnic tables sit out on the sheltered garden to the side and back, with a couple of long tables on the front cobbles by the quiet lane.
The rooms, built in 2012, are in a separate annexe to the side of the pub and all are accessible from the ground floor. Breakfast is not included in the price of the room and is charged at between £7.50 (for a basic breakfast) and £12.95 (for a full breakfast). Breakfast is served in the pub with a choice of muesli, cereal, yoghurts & fresh fruit; Full English or Eggs Benedict; tea, coffee & juices. Vegetarian options are also available.
