概述

International House is the perfect setting for a short stay in Melbourne. Set in a delightful garden environment, they offer a variety of single student bedrooms with in house catering, just a 10 minute walk away from the University of Melbourne. Lygon Street in Carlton, a bustling quarter of restaurants, cafes, bookshops and a handy off-campus social centre for students, is also a 10 minute walk away. A short distance to the north is the Barkly Square shopping complex.

The residence is located approximately two kilometres to the north of the Melbourne City Centre and is situated on Royal Parade, a beautiful nineteenth century tree-lined boulevard. There is a tram stop very close by and it is a fifteen minute ride to the CBD and within walking distance to Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne Zoo and Royal Park Golf Course.

Melbourne is the capital city of the Garden State of Victoria and is an interesting mix of elegant buildings from the 1880s, startling examples of modern architecture, quirky laneways and a vibrant and cosmopolitan cultural life.

历史

Shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Australian government invited university students from countries in South East Asia to study in Australia as part of an aid program called the Colombo Plan. A significant number of these Colombo Plan students came to the University of Melbourne.

Various groups within and outside the University of Melbourne were interested in making these students feel welcome and assisting them to form friendships with Australian students. It was felt that the establishment of a new residential college for local and overseas students would best serve this interest.

The model of this new college was inspired by the International Houses Worldwide Movement, and International Houses which were already operating successfully in Europe and the United States, with the first one established in 1910 in Philadelphia. International House College was opened 1957 for its first intake of forty-two men from Australia and overseas as an independent, multi-cultural, self-supporting residential college owned and operated by the University of Melbourne. It was officially opened the following year by the Prime Minister of the day, the Rt Hon Robert G Menzies.

Continential breakfast options (buffet style ) is served between 7.30am - 9.30am in the Dimmicks Dining Hall and is included in the bed & breakfast tariff

This include fruits, yogurt, cereals, toast,, juice, & hot beverages etc.

Lunch and Dinner can also be arranged at additional cost.

The campus has a number of outdoor areas and gardens for guests to enjoy.

The House is effectively bordered on two sides by Princess Park and Royal Park, both of which boast a network of beautiful walking and cycling tracks.

Melbourne Zoo is a short walk away.

Bed linen, towels and soap are provided and refreshed every 4 - 5 nights. Washing facilities with dryers and ironing facilities (coin operated). All doors have electronic locks and security cameras record in most common areas. Luggage storage available.

Promptly met with a big smile upon arrival. Room was clean and had good facilities. Including a desk that was more comfortable to work at than those in many four star hotels I've stayed in. Bathrooms and toilets were very clean and well maintained. Breakfast choices were of wide variety and well prepared. Kitchen staff were friendly. A point for improvement would be the availability of a clothes iron. The biggest disadvantage with my room was the continuous loud traffic noise. If I stay again I will need a room that faces the courtyard. Thanks for having me.

The location was great and easy to get to on the tram and the breakfast was nice and filling. I wasn't shown where the breakfast room was when i got there but found it. There wasn't any coffee or tea there unless i missed where it was. It would be good to have a TV or another pillow thats a bit softer. Overall its perfect when your travelling on a budget.

Great value for money. Clean room, well maintained and clean facilities, great hot and cold breakfast. Helpful staff. Convenient location close to trams and walking distance to restaurants and shops. Will stay again.

International House is located to the north of the Melbourne CBD and The University of Melbourne, at 241 Royal Parade Parkville between Macarthur Road and Leonard Street. opposite Princes Park, near Royal Park.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

International House can be reached by catching the northbound number 19 tram along Elizabeth St towards North Coburg and alighting at Stop 15.

This is right outside a large white archway leading to our front door.

Further information may be obtained by telephoning 131638 or enquiring at any railway station.

When travelling into the city, the number 19 tram takes 15 -20 minutes to reach Flinders Street Station.

It is a short 10 minute walk to the University of Melbourne Campus.

AFTER HOURS ARRIVAL

If your arrival is not between the hours of 8.30am – 6pm, or you arrive on a weekend, the Duty Tutor will meet you and show you to your room.

Please contact the Duty Tutor on arrival. Use the free phone located inside the main door which is unlocked and call the internal extension number 731.

Or you can call the After Hours mobile phone number on your confirmation email which will also connect you.

Standard mobile charges apply.

Please note that guests who plan to arrive after 10.30pm and before 8.30am, need to make special arrangements with the Guest and Conference Coordinator, as these times are outside our check in hours.

We do not accept arrivals between the hours of 10.30pm and 7.00am.
