Overview

Queen’s College, University of Melbourne, is located at the heart of Australia’s most liveable city,  a 10-15 minute walk from the City Centre or a 5 minute tram ride. Melbourne’s eclectic precincts and fringe suburbs give the city a lively, multicultural, cosmopolitan pulse. Delight in international cuisine in Chinatown, the Greek Quarter, or the Italian district in Carlton.

The College is adjacent to the main campus of the University of Melbourne, which is just a 20-30 minute taxi ride from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine).

Queen's College is ideal for groups or individuals seeking clean and affordable accommodation close to Melbourne's city centre. Outside university semester times, single bedroom style casual accommodation (with shared bathrooms) are on offer.

History

Founded by the Rev. William Quick on June 16th, 1887 (Founder’s Day) on the piece of land granted by the Victorian Government to the Methodist Church, the College came to be named Queen’s in response to the Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign that was celebrated in that year. Queen’s was originally all male, becoming co-educational in 1973 and now has men and women in equal numbers. The motto of the College is the Latin phrase aedificamus in aeternum, which, when translated, means “We are building for eternity”.

Food & beverage

All meals are served in the Eakins Dining Hall throughout the year for all guests. A continental breakfast is already included with all accomodation bookings (available from 07.30am to 09.30am daily).

Queen’s College also provides a full conferencing service for both formal and informal events, functions, and dinners. Meet in one of the newly renovated rooms or dine in the historic Junior Common Room with its beautiful wood panelling and stain glass windows.

Several other lunch and dinner options are right on the doorstep including University of Melbourne's Union Building with various cafés and take-away options, as well as Rathdowne Street or Lygon Street, both of which boast various eateries.

Grounds & Gardens

Queen's College's central quadrangle hosts well established trees, gardens and intimate courtyards. Princess and Royal park and the lively Melbourne Zoo are all an easy walking distance from the college's front gate.

The "Beaurepaire Sport Centre" is a state-of-the-art fitness and health centre located just outside our rear enterance.

Other facilities

The TV Room and 24-hour tea and coffee self-service facility are available to all accomodation guests free of charge - home to comfortable couches, a big plasma TV with Foxtel and a DVD/VCR player, along with an array of drink and snack vending machines.

Laundry Facilities: Coin operated washers and dryers (2x $1 coins required) are located at the rear of the Dining Hall for your use while you stay at Queen's College.

Free Wireless Internet Access (WiFi) is available within the college grounds. Password and username available upon request on arrival.

Public payphones are located within the University, at Tin Alley (Swanson Street end) and in Monash Road, and outside the Union Building. During business hours they may also be accessed in the Basement of Union Building.

Queen Victoria Market is just 15 minutes' walk away and is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs, food and do some shopping (closed on Mondays & Wednesdays).
