Overview

***Please note that Medley is undergoing some major facade work and whilst the building is enveloped in scaffolding, be rest assured that the accommodation is functioning as per normal****

During the academic year, Medley Hall accommodates university students.  When the academic year ends, rooms become available to external guests looking for affordable accommodation in one of the best areas in Melbourne. Although Medley Hall is not a hotel, linen and towels are provided to guests staying. There is no room service, nor is there shampoo, conditioner or soap provided.  Please note this.

Only a five-minute walk to the heart of the city in one direction and a ten-minute walk to The University of Melbourne in the other, Medley Hall is in the perfect location. It is close to public transport and city airline bus terminals. Just around the corner is the bistro life of Carlton, and around the other are the Exhibition Gardens, the Central Business District, Chinatown, theatres and nightclubs.

Single study bedrooms are available. Most rooms have an extra-long single bed. The rooms are clean but basic.

The magnificent Victorian Italianate building, “Benvenuta”, is where the dining hall, formal lounge room and music room are situated.

Conferences, meetings and private functions enquiries are welcome and may be accommodated throughout the year. The college has wheelchair access throughout.

History

Medley Hall stands on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People. Completed in 1892 at 48 Drummond Street for Leah Abrahams, Benvenuta, meaning ‘Welcome’, was designed by architect Walter Scott Law in an Italianate Victorian Baroque style. For the building’s construction, stained glass and over 15 tons of marble and steel, and craftsmen to create the ornate interior were all brought over from Italy.

Food & beverage

Each level of accommodation has a kitchenette with complimentary tea and coffee facilities and has a communal fridge, toaster and microwave.  Downstairs in the TV lounge area, there is a communal kitchen complete with oven, pots, pans and cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery.

A two minute walk away is Lygon Street, which is lined with cafes and restaurants.  There you will also find supermarkets, delicatessens, chemists and a post office. In the other direction and only a short walk away, guests will reach the city centre where endless shops and cafes, theatres and restaurants can be found.
