Yeoldon House Hotel, Bideford

Geschichte

Little is known about Yeoldon House until the late eighteen century.

Between 1860 and 1880 a Colonel Pierce bought the property. At this time it is thought that the house was an old cottage or farmhouse which today makes up the old part of the hotel. Colonel Pierce built the house to the shape it is now with the exception of the balconies outside “Hubbastone” (built in 1907) and “Kingsley”, added in the 1990s. Colonel Pierce was a philanthropist who kept an old ship, The Iron King, in the dock by the quay. It was here that 30 orphans, from Bideford and Appledore, were educated. Each day an old ship's captain would walk up the river path in order to teach the three ‘r’s - reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic as well as knots, splices and seamanship. Each month The Iron King would leave the dock for 4 or 5 days, on the spring tides, to give these children practical seamanship.

In 1948, CDR Mansell, whose family had been official photographers and owned the Mansell Collection, bought the house on his retirement from the Navy. He ran the house as a retirement home for 25 years, one resident living here for 23 years. A seat in the garden commemorates his time at Yeoldon.

The house was finally turned into a hotel in 1972 and changed ownership several times before it was purchased by Brian and Jennifer, the current resident owners of this truly delightful property.

A traditional full English breakfast is served in the restaurant with views over the River Torridge.

The Yeoldon House Restaurant is named after the famous Victorian chef Alexis Soyer - source of inspiration to proprietor-chef Brian Steele. Brian takes great pride in cooking and presenting excellent food. You will enjoy imaginative cuisine from a daily changing menu that incorporates fresh fish, meat and vegetables from the locality.

Grundstücke und Gärten

Yeoldon House is situated at the end of a private drive ensuring peace and privacy at all times. The gently sloping gardens provide delightful areas to sit and enjoy the scenery either in front of the hotel with a pot of tea or a glass of wine, or down beside the tinkling waterfall watching the fish gliding through the pond.

Support for the Mobility Impaired. Yeoldon House is a Victorian building with limited access for guests in wheelchairs. The entrance from the car park is level so access can be gained to the lounge and dining room but we do not have toilet facilities for the disabled. However, the cloakrooms are also on a level. Our staff are trained to help guests with any disabilities as far as possible. All our bedrooms are situated on the first and second floors but, due to the nature of the building, we are unable to install a lift. 

Support for the Visually Impaired. We are happy to produce menus in large print when required.

There is private free parking on-site.
