Overview

Jesus College is set in uniquely spacious and peaceful grounds. Its buildings include some of the oldest and most attractive in Cambridge. The college is easily accessible from major road networks and is within five minutes' walk of the city centre.

The new development, West Court, offers a range of luxury accommodation with all year round availability. The stylish and comfortable accommodation offers double and single ensuite, shared facility (standard) bedrooms and one bedroom apartments. Each bedroom includes a work station with free Wi-Fi, a flat screen TV, a hospitality tray and complimentary toiletries.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer family rooms nor do we have facilities available to make provisions for children sleeping in bedrooms.

History

The college was founded in 1496 and originally consisted of buildings taken over from the nunnery: namely the chapel and the cloister attached to it; the nuns’ refectory, which became the college Hall; and the former lodging of the Prioress, which became the Master’s Lodge. This set of buildings remains the core of the college to this day and accounts for its distinctly monastic and non-collegiate character, which sets it apart from all the other Cambridge colleges. A library was soon added, on the floor above the college hall, and the chapel was considerably modified and reduced in scale by Alcock to make way for the expansion of the cloisters. He had the chapel re-roofed at a lower pitch and inserted large windows in the Perpendicular style. He also had the college hall re-roofed in Spanish chestnut.

Over the centuries, the college’s Tudor buildings have been preserved and restored and new buildings have been added; the result is a delightful and harmonious mixture of tradition and modernity. The newer buildings include the Quincentenaries’ Library and the brand new West Court development. The college is also a center for contemporary art, holding regular sculpture exhibitions and acquiring new works for display in the college grounds.

Food & beverage

A continental breakfast with a daily hot option is included in the rates (unless otherwise stated) and is served in the West Court Dining room from 7.30am to 9.00am weekdays and 8.00am to 9.30am on weekends and public holidays.

West Court provides a great hub for our guests with a Cafe, Pavilion and Bar. Visitors can relax and enjoy coffee, cakes and freshly made sandwiches. Or unwind after a conference or day out exploring over evening drinks. Opening times for the cafe may vary or may be closed outside of College term time. Please email  conference@jesus.cam.ac.uk if you would like to check specific opening times.

Grounds & Gardens

The grounds at Jesus College have an extensive variety of beautiful gardens. These include, sheltered courts and more informal areas such as the Orchard. Recent improvements to the woodland walk through The Grove at the perimeter of the College Close have earned their gardening team an award for the promotion of biodiversity.

There is also a famous woodland walk and the Porters and reception staff would be happy to recommend walking or running routes in the local area.

Other facilities
