Birchall Lodge & Angling sits on the western shores of Lough Corrib. The Lodge is located in its own grounds, right on the water's edge, enjoying uninterrupted views across the Lough, and plenty of space to walk and enjoy the area. The bustling town of Oughterard is less than ten minutes' drive away, and the incredible city of Galway is under half an hour by car.
For anglers, Lough Corrib is a mecca of fly fishing. The trout and salmon season runs from Feb 15th until Sept 30th. Early in the seaon, Duck Fly is the fly of choice, giving way to Olives and the incredible Mayfly hatches. Buzzer, Caenis and sedge will take the angler through to the season close. The Lodge has its private access to the Lough, with its own boats and moorings just a few metres from the lodge itself. Outside of the trout season, Padraig also offers pike fishing on fly or bait, targeting the Lough's impressive predators.
Padraig Fahy has 35 years experience of fishing Corrib, and has represented Ireland internationally. Few know the water better than him, so anglers are in safe hands. A Guide is to be recommended on Corrib, for it is truly huge, with rocky islets and shallows, and it can be challenging to find fish without local knowledge, in addition to being a bit 'tricky' in the wrong weather.
Birchall Lodge offers luxurious accommodation in six doubles, each ensuite. Full Irish breakfast is offered in the sunroom overlooing the lough. The Lodge boasts a games room, TV room, and gym. There is also a sauna and steam room (which need to be pre-booked).
Why you need to fish here
The immense limestone Lough Corrib - second largest in Ireland - is fabled for its brown trout and salmon fishing. It's enormous size presents numerous habitats for fish, and opportunities for fly fishing. It is 44km long and up to 16km side, with 300 islets of which some are wooded, and endlessly varied rocky shoreline. The River Corrib empties the Lough into the at Galway, and provides the conduit for the large salmon run that enters the system each year to spawn.
