History

Memorial University of Newfoundland established its Harlow Campus in 1969 as a unique international extension of the university in Canada. Located in Old Harlow, Essex, the campus was developed from a group of restored 19th-century buildings, including The Maltings and Cabot House.

Originally constructed as part of Harlow’s historic brewing and milling industry, these buildings were transformed into a residential and academic facility designed to support study-abroad programs. The campus has since welcomed thousands of Memorial students and faculty, becoming an integral part of the university’s global learning strategy.

The Maltings building once served as a key part of Harlow’s local grain-processing trade before its conversion.

The Harlow Campus was Memorial University’s first permanent international campus and remains one of the few UK-based campuses owned by a Canadian university.

The site has hosted programs in disciplines as diverse as Pharmacy, Business, Visual Arts, and Education, often incorporating UK-wide field experiences.

Today, the campus offers a blend of historical character and modern facilities, continuing its mission as a bridge between Canadian and UK academic and cultural life.
