The Three Cups Inn, Stockbridge

The Three Cups Inn sits right in the middle of Stockbridge, one of Hampshire’s most beautiful and historic towns, in the heart of the Test Valley.
We are an independent free house in the same family since 1978, which probably explains a lot about the way the place feels. A 600-year-old inn that’s had plenty of time to become what it is.
The River Test runs through the village and, rather wonderfully, through our garden too. It’s a place known for its chalk stream trout fishing, wildlife, and that slightly slower pace that people come here for.
Inside, The Cups is exactly what you hope an old inn will be. Low wooden beams, stone and wood floors, oak tables that have seen a bit of life, fresh flowers, open fires when you need them. It feels like somewhere you can settle into rather than just pass through. If you prefer a bit more light, the orangery looks straight out onto the garden and catches the day beautifully.
Upstairs, our eleven ensuite bedrooms are all individually put together. Nothing identical, nothing corporate. Just comfortable, well-thought-out rooms with proper beds, good showers, fresh coffee, and all the bits you actually want when you stay somewhere, whether you’re here for the river, the countryside, or just a night away. Breakfast is cooked fresh in the morning, as it should be.
In the kitchen, we focus on classic British pub food done properly. No fuss, just good ingredients and dishes that people genuinely want to eat. Front of house keeps things relaxed and welcoming, so you can take your time and enjoy it.
There are a few different places to sit, depending on your mood. Cosy corners, low-beamed dining rooms with candles in the evening, or the orangery if you want to feel a bit closer to the garden.
Outside is where a lot of people end up. The terrace runs alongside the river, with a south-facing garden that gets the sun when it’s out. It’s one of those spots where a quick drink turns into a long afternoon. Come and see, you are very welcome!
