La storia di Sheffield

Sheffield history

Sheffield: the city

Sheffield, which is in South Yorkshire, is the fourth largest city in England and is so named because of its origins in a field on the River Sheaf that runs through the city.

The area that is now the City of Sheffield has been occupied since at least the last ice age, but the settlements that grew to form Sheffield date from the second half of the 1st millennium, and are of Anglo-Saxon and Danish origin. After the Norman conquest, Sheffield Castle was built to protect the local settlements, and a small town developed that is the nucleus of the modern city. By 1296 a market had been established at what is now known as Castle Square, and Sheffield subsequently grew into a small market town. In the 14th century Sheffield was already noted for the production of knives, as mentioned in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and by 1600 it had become the main centre of cutlery production in England, overseen by The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. From 1570 to 1584 Mary, Queen of Scots was held as a prisoner in Sheffield Castle and Sheffield Manor.

The room was clean, well equipped and well priced. I was very pleased with my stay. Check in and out were quick, easy and efficient. The only negative comment I would make is that the central heating was quite noisy and the pipes in the room made quite a lot of noise throughout the night.

Arriving in the dark, I saw no sign directing me to reception and had to ring for directions. Room was basic but all that I needed for one night, clean and comfortable.

The tap water was too hot...almost impossible to wash hands and brush teeth. I needed to use the shower for hand wash which was uncomfortable plus it had a non-functional handle. I suggest this issue to be checked and improved.

Great value for money and decent breakfast thrown in, downsides were location - its 2-3 miles from the city centre and rooms a little small (but to be expected at price).

Excellent help by staff on final day: my colleague forgot her backpack, the personel present immediately rushed after us and drove it to the railway station.

A sign for the kitchen should be installed. I didn't know there was a kitchen there. There were not any cutlery in the kitchen. Price per night should be no more than twenty pounds. My room faced the convenience store and because there were chairs there, people tend to talk till late like 11:30 pm. Once I had to tell them to be quiet and they left.

I wasn't able to enjoy breakfast on Sunday morning as it wasn't available before 8am. This is too late in my opinion. Even on a Sunday breakfast should be available from 7am

The staff at reception couldn't have been more helpful. I was shown to my room and the offer to carry my luggage was made, for which I was grateful. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. My only (slight) criticism was that the shower released just a trickle of water. All in all, outstanding staff and a good room.

As this is the recommended venue for interviews for the University it would have been nice to have basics like shower gel, shampoo and a hairdryer in the room! Or at least to point out clearly that these are NOT provided. Otherwise, very comfy and cosy accommodation.
