St Stephen's House, Oxford

University residence

You are no longer required to do a Covid test before arriving at the House. If you are displaying symptoms before arriving please cancel. You will be fully refunded.

St Stephen's House is a Theological College and a Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford, situated close to Magdalen Bridge in a quiet street running between Cowley Road and Iffley Road in East Oxford. Formerly a monastery, with the warm, relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of a country house with modern facilities. There are only 50 bedrooms so you will never feel overwhelmed, but unlike other Oxford Colleges, there isn't a Porter's Lodge or a Reception, so you will be responsible for accessing the college yourself. Please be aware that there is no disabled access, and the entrance is by steep concrete steps.

Providing student accommodation, and as such, the bedrooms are not to hotel standards and do not have televisions or a telephone. However, all bedrooms are clean, tidy and comfortable, with a refreshment tray, towels and toiletries (towels are changed once a week). Unless you have selected an ensuite room, you will be sharing unisex bathroom facilities.

If you are staying during term time, please note that the college operates a silence policy during the night hours between 11.00pm and 7.30am on weekdays to allow students and guests to study and sleep undisturbed, but do be aware that Church bells are rung early in the morning.

Smoking is not permitted in any of the buildings and pets are not allowed. Also, the college is unable to accept bookings from Stag & Hen parties.

Value accommodation in a clean and quiet facility. No problems sleeping. Pre-arrival instructions were clear. The internet was strong. I was in the most basic single room and believe the website said there would be a sink in the room. I did not have a sink in my room. There was no work sp...

This was my second stay at St. Steven's House. My en suite single room was well equipped with a desk, wardrobe, etc. The bathroom was spacious and the water was delightfully hot. I had upgraded from the basic single and this was a huge step up for not much more money. It was in a part of the...

It is quiet and a short walk from the city centre. There is no porter so support is minimal. But there is a contact number to use dur...

Another delightful stay at St. Stephen's House. Definitely the place for those wanting a quiet, convenient place in Oxford. Not for party animals; instead for those who want a peaceful night in good, standard student accommodation.

Room was as expected. Bathroom was slightly cramped for 2 people. Breakfast was nice. The building was secure and easy to find.

Arrival information and directions

Address: St Stephen's House, 16 Marston St, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OxfordOX4 1JX, United Kingdom

It is kindly asked that you do not arrive before check-in, as your bedroom will not be ready.

There is not a Porters Lodge or a Reception, so you will be responsible for accessing the college yourself. On arrival at check-in time (16.00), you may collect your room key and go directly to your room

Once notification of your booking has been received, St Stephen's House will send you a separate email providing you with all the access information you need. This is a separate email sent at a later date and is not the same as the one you automatically receive from University Rooms confirming your booking.  As there isn't a Porter's Lodge or Reception, it is extremely important that you read and bring this information with you.

If you need to cancel your booking, please ensure you contact University Rooms in the first instance, who will then, in turn, notify the College.
