Barcaldine House Hotel, Argyll

Histoire

Barcaldine House was built in 1709 by Patrick Campbell IV of Barcaldine. The stunning Georgian piece of architecture was the work of James Duff, a mason of Oban at that time. To this day, several of its original features are still intact and bring character and charm throughout the spacious, country mansion. The house saw several developments throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Around the mid 18th century, James Duff was again commissioned to add a third storey and a kitchen to the property. In the early 19th century, further extensions were made to the house by Patrick Campbell’s great grandson Duncan Campbell VIII of Barcaldine. A court of offices, built by John Drummond, a Jacobean style library and additional bedrooms were added to the house.

The whole estate was sold in 1842 to the Cameron family later to be sold again to the Stewart-Rankines. Most of the estate grounds were later owned by the Forestry Commission and planting of trees began in 1925. The house lay semi-derelict until 1959 when it was purchased by Miss Kathleen Hunter, a health food supplements manufacturer. From 1985 to present day, the house has operated as a first class B&B and luxury hotel.

Breakfast is included in the price and includes the following; a selection of cereals, muesli & yoghurt, oatmeal porridge with berry compote, poached fruits with creme fraiche and hazelnuts and a choice of; full Scottish breakfast, smoked salmon & scrambled egg on oatmeal toast, eggs benedict, grilled Loch Fyne kippers, coffee, tea and herbal infusions and fruit juice.

Our chef prepares a delicious menu for the hotel restaurant offering the very best in local Scottish cuisine.

A guest dining table in the kitchen gives our guests the opportunity of experiencing the 'ultimate dining experience'. A well stocked lounge bar is available offering guests the finest range of malts, cognacs and local bottled ales.
