Histoire

Founded in 1845 as Queen’s College Galway, the University of Galway opened in 1849 with 68 students and has since grown into one of Ireland’s leading universities. Its iconic Quadrangle Building, built in Tudor Gothic style from local limestone, stands proudly on the River Corrib.

Originally part of the Queen’s University of Ireland, it became University College Galway (UCG) in 1908, NUI Galway in 1997, and officially University of Galway in 2022, with the name gaining legal status in 2024.

Blending a rich heritage in the Irish language with a forward-looking focus on research and innovation, the University of Galway continues to shape education and discovery on Ireland’s west coast.
