Überblick

James College is situated in the heart of the University of York campus. With acres of greenery and a peaceful lake, this is the ideal place to stay for easy access to the University of York and to the city of York, only two miles away, with buses to the city centre and the railway station running every ten minutes.

We offer comfortable single ensuite rooms with breakfast included.

Geschichte

James College was named after Lord James of Rusholme, the first Vice-Chancellor of University (1963-1972). Lord James had three principles for the development of the fledgling University: that is should be a collegiate university, that it should aim to limit the range of subjects taught, and that much of the teaching should be conducted in tutorials and seminars.

One of the more modern Colleges, James College was built in response to the increased student admissions and work began on the first phase in November 1989. The College was formally opened by Lady James on 5 October 1992.

The College now consists of 12 Blocks and is home to 500 students each year. All rooms now have high-speed internet connections. The College has its own Junior Common Room building, and also utilises shared space within Wentworth and Goodricke Colleges. Oliver James, son of Lord James, takes an active interest in the College and continues to support its activities.

Essen & Getränke

Wentworth College offers The Edge cafe and bar where breakfast is served (8.00am-9.30am Monday to Friday or 8.30-9.30am at weekends) and evening meals can be purchased, with snacks throughout the day. A breakfast ticket will be provided on check-in.

The City of York offers a wealth of bars and restaurants and provides a truly pleasant evening out, whether you are looking for a big night out or a quiet meal.

The University of York offers a wealth of grounds including sports fields, a central lake and a beautiful lawned garden near Heslington Hall. A relaxing place to stay in such a cosmopolitan city.

You can book in for a game of squash/tennis at our sports centre by calling (01904) 433855. Court hire incurs a small fee.

Internet access is available in your room. You will need a username and password provided in advance. Please call 01904 328431 to request this. These are charged at £10 per person. You will need an ethernet cable with your laptop to access this.

Fabulous venue and wonderful, helpful staff who did everything they could to make our stay as great as it could be. Beautiful grounds - peaceful walks round the lake with the opportunity to see hundreds of species of wild birds. However: the mattresses - they seriously need to sort out some of the mattresses which are old, damaged & painful. Also if you have a disability: the rooms are fully adapted but the heavy external doors to the accommodation block are not automatic or adapted.

Room was adequate, and shower was good. Breakfast menu was extensive although layout could be improved eg toast at one end of the room, and butter and jams were at the other end - not very logical.

A excellent deal room clean and tidy, en-suite and tea making facilities perfect. One small suggestion put on the website about the tea/coffee facilities and mention Towels are provided.

Clean Room , fine for price, Food was Very good, staff helpful. Perfect being on campus as they eat I was attending was all within a short walk of the room

My room was perfect for this short stay. It was very secure as I had to use my entry card three times to get into the room. Very quiet and clean.

Upon arrival please go to Wentworth College Porters' Lodge to collect your key. The reception is manned 24hrs a day.

Car Parking is available in Car Park West or South and is charged at £5/24hrs, £4/10hrs or £2/4hrs. Parking is free from midnight on Fridays and at weekends.The closest car park to the accommodation is car park west and south. From here you will be able to see information centre south where you check in.

Directions:

The University of York is based just off the A64 South East of the City of York

By Car from the A64: Turn off the A64 at the junction signposted York/Hull and head towards the City. You will pass B&Q on your right. Turn left at the next roundabout following signs for the University. Turn right at the next roundabout and straight over at the next roundabout/junction. You are now on site. Look out for a turning on your left called Newton Way. You will see South and West car parks here.

By Car from the City: Leave the city following signs for Hull. At the traffic lights turn right, following signs for the University. At the first roundabout go straight over and turn right at the 2nd and 3rd. Look out for a turning on your left called Newton Way. You will see South and West car parks here.

By train: York has fantastic rail links across the country and booking in advance can provide great deals (www.thetrainline.com). The station is only 2 miles from the University of York and will cost around £6-8 in a taxi or you can catch the number 4 bus from outside the station which leaves every tens minutes directly to the University of York campus.

By Taxi: If you are arriving in a taxi, please ask for James College Reception or information centre south. This will cost £6-8 from the station or city centre.

By Bus: The number 4 bus leaves from outside the railway station and the city centre every ten minutes. The bus takes 10-20minutes depending on traffic and sets of every 10-15 minutes both ways until around midnight. If you ask the bus conducter to let you know where the University Road stop is on the University of York campus, get off here and walk towards the costcutter on the opposite side of the road. You will need to go to the left of the costcutter following the walkway around the lake, past Central Hall and the Exhibition Centre. This will take you to car park south and west where you will see the information centre south. This is around a 5 minute walk.
