Summer Holidays in the UK, Top City Breaks and Things to Do

With the 2026 summer holidays quickly approaching, it's never too early to begin planning your next getaway. In recent years, many Britons have chosen to spend their summer exploring destinations closer to home, opting for memorable UK city breaks rather than travelling abroad.

Fortunately, the UK offers an amazing variety of summer destinations. From historic cities filled with culture and architecture to vibrant seaside towns and world-class festivals, there's no shortage of experiences and entertainment.

Here are a few of our favourite UK city destinations for summer breaks, along with some of the best things to see, do, and eat during your visit.

Edinburgh | Fantastic Festivals, Culture, and Coastal Views

Few cities come alive in summer quite like Edinburgh. Scotland’s capital transforms into one of the world’s most vibrant cultural hubs during July and August, with a packed calendar of festivals and performances.

In July The Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival brings live music to venues across the city, while August hosts several globally famous events. The Edinburgh International Festival showcases world-class theatre, dance and classical music, while the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo offers a spectacular nightly performance set against the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

Also in August, The Edinburgh Festival Fringe fills the city with comedy, theatre and street performances, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the historic Old Town.

During the summer months Edinburgh's universities open their accommodation doors to city visitors. By partnering with UniversityRooms.com, they're able to quickly fill vacant buildings, bringing much needed revenue to assist in facility upkeep and improvements when students are away. Destiny Student accommodation offers 4 locations throughout the city while Roomzzz Edinburgh is situated the closest to the city centre with just a 6 minutes walk to St. Andrew Square. When you need a break from the crowds, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh provides beautiful green space for a peaceful stroll, while nearby Portobello Beach offers a traditional seaside escape just a short distance from the city centre.

Of course, we can't talk about Edinburgh without mentioning the fantastic food options at your fingertips. Stockbridge Market is one of the city's best food markets and a great place to grab some smoked salmon, shortbread, or neeps and tatties. The Edinburgh Farmers' Market is excellent for local meat, seafood, and produce from Scottish farms while The Grassmarket area offers delicious traditional dishes within historic surroundings.

York | Experience History Around Every Corner

York is one of England’s most historic cities and makes a perfect destination for a relaxed summer city break. Begin with a walk through The Shambles, a beautifully preserved medieval street filled with independent shops, cafés and historic buildings. This is also a great place to sample Yorkshire street food and local baked goods, while traditional tea rooms offer classic Yorkshire treats such as curd tart and parkin. Just a short walk away, the magnificent York Minster dominates the skyline and offers visitors the chance to explore one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe.

Accommodation-wise, a favourite in York is the Roomzzz Aparthotel York City which is located on the River Ouse, right next to Rowntree Park. Those seeking to stay a bit further afield often enjoy Franklin House, just 2.3 km from city centre.

History lovers are welcome to explore the JORVIK Viking Centre, where immersive exhibits bring York’s Viking past to life, as well as the peaceful ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey located within the city’s Museum Gardens.

London | Enjoy Endless Summer Entertainment

London is a city which never runs out of things to do, and summer is one of the best times to visit. The capital’s parks, riverside areas, and cultural venues host a wide variety of outdoor events and festivals.

Music lovers can attend Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park, one of the UK’s biggest contemporary music festivals. Meanwhile, Kew the Music at the Royal Botanic Gardens offers a series of concerts in a stunning garden setting.

Classical music fans can enjoy the world-famous BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, while theatre enthusiasts can experience performances under the stars at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

Across the city, many venues also host open-air cinema screenings, allowing visitors to enjoy films in some of London’s most scenic outdoor spaces. Though accommodation near these venues is usually expensive, visitors have found that university accommodation often provides a better experience for a lower price. Some of the more budget-friendly rooms available can be found at Arthur Tattersalls House, Astor College, Duchy House, Schafer House, Ian Baker House, and Goldsmid House. These are all in fantastic parts of the city and make commuting by tube or bus quite easy, perfect for experiencing all London has to offer this summer.

London also boasts one of the most international collections of food in the country. Borough Market, Camden Market, and Maltby Street Market are all delectable choices for sampling some of the best cuisine the city has on offer.
